Chapter 247 Unexpected Pregnancy

I slowly came to in the hospital bed, the sharp scent of disinfectant hitting my nose, my head still a bit fuzzy. I spotted Edward by the window, struggling to sit up.

Edward noticed I was awake and walked over. "Diana, you're finally awake. Thank God."

His eyes were red, and his serious expression softened. He gently took my hand without even realizing it.

The doctor came in soon after, carefully checking me over. Smiling, the doctor said I was fine and just needed to stay in the hospital for a few days for observation before being discharged.

Edward followed the doctor, asking about all the precautions with such seriousness that I couldn't help but stare at him.

Outside the room, I could hear the muffled voices of police officers discussing the aftermath of the accident.

When they found out I was awake, the door creaked open. Two uniformed police officers entered quietly, their faces serious. The older officer cleared his throat, trying to sound gentle, "Ms. Cooper, hello. We're the officers in charge of this case. We need to understand the full details of the incident. Please cooperate with us."

Edward frowned, his voice urgent and dissatisfied, "She just woke up and is still very weak. She needs to rest. Can't you come back later?" He glanced at me as he spoke.

The officer looked troubled, exchanging a glance with his colleague, seemingly weighing the situation. He then explained, "We understand, but this case has significant public impact. We need to provide answers."

Edward, however, was unwavering, his tone growing firmer, "No, nothing is more important than her health right now. If you have questions, wait until she's better. I'll personally bring her to the station to cooperate with the investigation."

Seeing his resolute attitude, the officers sighed in resignation. The older officer nodded slightly, "Alright, please notify us when she's better. This case is extensive, and we need your cooperation." With that, they saluted and slowly walked out.

Edward watched them leave, only returning to sit by my bed once the door closed softly. He held my hand and said gently, "Don't worry about it. I'll handle everything."

I thought about the past. Whether it was Aria or Anne, was Edward always the one to "handle" things for them?

During my hospital stay, whenever Aria was mentioned, a flash of pain would cross his eyes. I knew it was the guilt of not being able to save her.

But at night, when I woke up from nightmares filled with explosions and Aria's cries for help, Edward would gently stroke my back, helping me fall back asleep.

For several days, Edward managed the Howard Group's affairs during the day and visited me at the hospital at night. Soon, the exhaustion on his face became evident.

One day, the doctor came into the room, gently patting Edward's shoulder, signaling him to step outside. Edward tucked me in and followed the doctor out, the door closing slowly behind them, leaving me alone inside.

After a while, Edward returned, his expression complex and hesitant, making me worry.

Before I could say anything, the doctor walked in with a big smile. "Congrats, Mr. Howard, Ms. Cooper. The test results are in. Ms. Cooper is pregnant, and the baby is doing great. You'll need to take good care of yourself." The doctor's cheerful announcement felt like a bomb going off in the room.

I widened my eyes, instinctively covering my stomach. Edward and I had only been together once recently. How could I be pregnant?

Edward tightened his grip on my hand slightly, speaking softly, "Diana, don't worry. This time, I won't let anything happen to you or the baby."

His voice was gentle yet firm.

But I lowered my eyes, avoiding his gaze, and responded quietly, "Okay, I understand."

I felt both anxious about the new life and uncertain about the future. Even though Aria had passed away, the knot in my heart remained. When Lila heard about my pregnancy, she was over the moon.

One day, the door was gently pushed open, and Lila, Daisy, and Theo came to visit me.

Lila's voice reached my ears before she even entered the room, "Diana, you had us all worried. How are you feeling?"

She held a large bouquet of flowers, placing them on the bedside table and holding my hand.

Daisy and Theo followed closely behind. Daisy set the fruit she brought on the table, pulled up a chair, and sat down, looking at me, "Diana, just focus on getting better. Don't worry about anything else. I've uncovered new leads on the fraud case, and the truth will come out soon."

As she spoke, she glanced at Edward, a complex look in her eyes.

Theo, sensing Edward's discomfort, bowed slightly and said politely, "Mr. Howard, thank you for taking care of Ms. Cooper these past few days."

Edward nodded slightly, forcing a smile, "She's my wife. It's my duty to take care of her."

Theo, knowing I was reluctant to reconcile with Edward, changed the subject, "Ms. Cooper, everything at the Cooper Group is fine. I've taken care of everything. Just focus on your recovery."

Theo and I had a good relationship, and he always looked out for me like an older brother. He rarely called me Ms. Cooper, likely doing so today because of Edward's presence.

Lila looked at Edward, half-jokingly but seriously said, "Edward, seeing how well you're taking care of her now, I'll trust you for now. But if I find out you've mistreated her or the baby, I won't let you off easily."

Edward, abandoning his usual CEO demeanor, nodded solemnly, looking at me with hope that I would say something supportive.

I, harboring resentment towards Edward and not desiring his care, simply said, "It's okay."

Lila, sensing the tension between Edward and me, gently patted my hand and whispered so only we could hear, "Diana, if you need to talk, I'm here."

I nodded slightly, my throat tight with emotion, expressing my gratitude with this small gesture.

With Edward present, there were things we couldn't discuss openly.

After a while, the three of them got up to leave.

After seeing them off, Edward noticed me staring out the window in a daze. He walked over and asked, trying to sound casual, "Diana, what are you thinking about?"

I turned to him, calmly saying, "Nothing, just a bit tired."

He hesitated, then said, "Alright, get some rest."

With that, he turned and left.
