Chapter 45 Covering Up the Embarrassment

The heated moment in the basement was shattered in an instant, replaced by a wave of awkwardness. Anne stood there for a second, then bolted.

As soon as she ran, my heart sank. Shame hit me like a ton of bricks. When I looked up, she was already gone. My eyes drifted to Edward, who looked just as serious.

My face was still burning. I quickly grabbed the clothes scattered on the floor and wrapped them around me. The fabric felt rough, but it gave me a bit of comfort. Edward hurriedly put his shirt back on too.

Anne reappeared at the basement door, this time with Joshua and his crew.

"Edward, help me!" Anne ignored the awkwardness and ran straight into Edward's arms.

"What do you want?" Edward asked coldly.

"Mr. Howard, we're from the Wind City Police Department. Anne's involved in a case, and we need to take her in for questioning," Joshua said, leading the group.

"Edward, I don't want to go to the police station." The usual sparkle in Anne's eyes was gone, replaced by despair.

"Anne's young; she might not handle questioning well," Edward said, attempting to be diplomatic.

"Mr. Howard, here's the arrest warrant. Please cooperate," Joshua said, pulling out the warrant.

Edward had no choice but to let them take Anne away.

"Edward, help me! Diana's framing me!" Anne shouted as they led her out.

"Sorry to bother you," Joshua said, giving me a complicated look before turning to leave.

"Stop!" Edward barked.

Joshua turned back, still smiling professionally. "Anything else, Mr. Howard?"

Edward looked dangerous, like a beast ready to pounce. Joshua's professional smile seemed to push him over the edge.

"No one takes a Howard away in front of me. Joshua, you took Anne today; don't you think you should leave something in return?" Edward said coldly.

"Anne's suspected of serious crimes. The warrant's legit! Obstruct us, and I'll arrest you too," Joshua said, dead serious.

Edward clenched his fists.

"You wanna fight?" Joshua asked coldly.

Edward's eyes burned with anger. He gritted his teeth, his fists turning white. Joshua stood firm, ready for anything.

I watched, frozen with fear, as the tension between them grew.

Edward threw a punch at Joshua.

"Watch out!" I yelled.

Joshua, being a cop, dodged it easily. "If you want a fight, I won't back down," he said.

He took off his police hat and neatly placed his uniform on the old sofa.

"Joshua, don't!" I warned him, nervous.

I knew Edward worked out a lot. I still remembered how he floored David in less than three rounds. I didn't want to see Joshua get hurt. More importantly, Joshua was just a regular cop, even if he was a captain. He was no match for Edward’s influence. Edward could have him ruined.

"Joshua, stop. You can't beat Edward," I cautioned.

Edward swung at Joshua again, and my heart tightened with unease.

I took a small step back, clutching my clothes. Joshua dodged the attack and threw a punch at Edward. My mind went blank, and my heart raced. Instinctively, I jumped in front of Edward, taking the hit on my shoulder. The impact sent me stumbling back into Edward's arms, pain shooting through my shoulder.

"Diana!"

"Diana!"

Two voices called out at the same time.

Edward and I fell onto the worn-out sofa. My hand landed on something sticky. The smell of semen hit me, and I blushed.

Before Edward could react, Joshua rushed over to help me up. When he saw the semen on my hand and smelled the air, he understood. His eyes widened in disbelief. I could only give him an awkward smile, trying to hide my embarrassment.
