Chapter 232 Breakup

I gave Theo a nod and stepped out of the office to take the call.

"David," I said, my voice trembling.

On the other end, David's voice was low and urgent. "Diana, where are you? I need to see you."

I hesitated. "I'm at Stellar Legal Advisors. Are you in town?"

David didn't answer directly, but I could feel the urgency in his voice. "Alright, I'll come over right now. Let's meet at the café downstairs."

He hung up abruptly.

Feeling a mix of anxiety and anticipation, I headed to the café and grabbed a seat by the window. My eyes kept darting to the door, each minute dragging on. Finally, David walked in, and I let out a long breath, my nerves easing up. I practically threw myself into his arms, burying my face in his chest. His heartbeat pounded in my ears, a silent testament to his longing.

After a moment, David gently let go, his eyes scanning me with a mix of tenderness and anger. Tears welled up in his eyes, barely held back.

Confused, I asked softly, "David, what's wrong?"

I reached into my bag for a handkerchief and offered it to him.

David didn't take it. Instead, he pulled me back into a tight embrace, holding me so firmly I could hardly breathe.

"Diana, I heard everything. That bastard..." He couldn't finish, his body trembling as he held me tighter.

I patted his back, trying to soothe him. "It's over now. He didn't really hurt me. Don't worry."

David's hand moved to my neck, touching the scarf I used to cover my scar. His eyes turned sharp and fierce as he spoke through gritted teeth. "Diana, this isn't over! I won't let him get away with it. Even if he just thought about it, I'll make him pay dearly. He'll regret ever crossing you!"

With a sigh, I looked into David's eyes and pleaded, "He's your brother, David. Think about your father, too."

"Brother? Has he ever treated me like one? All he cares about is the Wilson family fortune!" David's forehead veins bulged as he shouted, drawing curious glances from the other patrons.

Ignoring them, he continued, "And Edward was the one who saved you. You'd rather go back to him than tell me? As your boyfriend, I was thousands of miles away, clueless while you were in danger. It feels like a thousand needles stabbing my heart! If I let Lanny off, how could I face you? If I can't protect you, what kind of future can we have?"

My fingers traced his shoulder as I lowered my head, unable to meet his eyes. "I didn't tell you because you were so far away. How did you find out?" I said.

Hearing this, David took a deep breath, trying to steady his voice. "Diana, how long were you planning to keep this from me? Even if you didn't tell me, someone else would."

David's pain was palpable, a storm brewing behind his eyes.

I couldn't help but ask, "Was it Edward who told you?"

David's brow furrowed, anger flashing in his eyes as his voice rose. "Why did he tell me but not you? Diana, why don't you trust me? What are you thinking?"

His gaze bore into me, making me feel guilty.

I nervously twisted the hem of my shirt, my eyes welling up. "Lanny left me at the hospital entrance. Edward just happened to pass by and save me. You were abroad. Even if I told you everything, you couldn't have helped. I didn't want you to worry. It's not about trust. Why can't you understand?" I explained.

I didn't know how Edward had described the situation to David or how much of it was true. I could only try to explain.

David seemed struck by my words, his body stiffening as the anger drained from his face. After a long silence, he spoke with difficulty. "Diana, let's break up."

I stared at him, my mind blank. It took a while to process his words. "What did you say?" My voice was sharp with shock, and my hands covered my mouth.

David avoided my gaze, his voice low. "I said, let's break up."

"Why?" I asked.

I almost shouted, the unfairness spreading through me. "We've been through so much. You promised we'd be together forever. How can you just end it?"

David gave a bitter smile, full of self-mockery. He responded, "I can't give you happiness and safety. Only Edward can. Let's break up. Go back to being Mrs. Howard and live a stable life."

His voice grew quieter, as if sentencing himself.

"And what about you?" I asked.

I stared at him, tears blurring my vision. "What will you do?"

I reached out instinctively, but David stepped back.

His bitter smile deepened, exhaustion etched on his face. "Ignis is good. I'll follow my father's plan and start over there. I won't have to worry about these problems anymore." His voice was hoarse, tinged with despair.

I shook my head desperately, not caring about my disheveled hair. "No! You promised to take care of me forever. How can you give up so easily? What about our promises?" I shouted.

David sighed softly, raising his hand to touch me but then letting it fall. He said, "I wanted to protect you, but I didn't expect the harm to come from my own family. I'm torn between family and love. What should I do? I can't face it. So, let's break up. Let Edward take care of you."

A tear slid down his cheek, breaking my heart.

Anger, pain, and frustration overwhelmed me, clouding my judgment. I threw the coffee in David's face. He didn't react and didn't even try to dodge, just standing there as the hot liquid soaked him, his eyes locked on mine.

"You think you can decide when we're together and when we break up?" I spat, my voice shaking with rage. "I won't agree! I won't give up on us!" My legs trembled, but I stood my ground.

Needing to escape, I took a deep breath and turned, walking quickly away. Each step felt heavy, my body leaden with exhaustion and grief. David didn't follow. I reached the corner and collapsed onto a bench.
