Chapter 137 Danger Approaches Again
I felt a wave of compassion. "Don't worry, Tessa. As a fellow woman, I'll definitely help you," I said, my voice catching a bit. I knew I should stay professional and not get too emotionally involved, but seeing Tessa so broken would melt anyone's heart. My eyes were full of sympathy and determination.
"But Ms. Cooper, I have no money," Tessa said, looking embarrassed and helpless. "Since we got married, he hasn't let me work. At first, I thought it was because he cared about me, but then I realized he just wanted to control me. Without my own income, I had to rely on the little allowance he gave me. But then he started resenting me for not making money and even stopped giving me that allowance." She broke down, sobbing, her shoulders shaking. It was heartbreaking.
Her words hit me like a lightning bolt, leaving me shocked and angry. To keep her crying from affecting me, I took a deep breath to calm down, then gently comforted her, patting her shoulders to give her some strength and warmth. After she left, I remembered what Edward had once said to me, "If you weren't my wife, what would you be?"
Luckily, I realized in time why he didn't want me to work and got back into my career. My heart was a mix of sympathy for Tessa, anger at the domestic violence, and a stronger determination to help her win this case.
After Tessa left, I couldn't calm down for a while. I knew not every case would be as profitable as Alice's, but living alone in the apartment Mason had left me, combined with my steady lawyer's income, was enough for a comfortable life. Plus, the money from Alice's case and selling the Cooper Group gave me financial security, so I wasn't struggling.
Still, I felt conflicted. On one hand, the financial stability allowed me the rare freedom to choose my cases without the pressure of chasing high profits. On the other hand, I worried this mindset might make me slack off. As a lawyer, I still wanted to achieve greater success and breakthroughs in my career.
In the following days, I took Daisy's advice and stayed away from online information, leaving it all to her. Life was pretty peaceful. But less than a week later, Daisy told me she had an urgent matter and needed to go back to Veridian.
At the airport, saying goodbye to Daisy, I felt a bit reluctant and worried. "I thought you wouldn't leave once you came back. What happened that made you leave so quickly? Did Edward threaten you?"
I hoped she was leaving for work reasons and feared she was in trouble, but she didn't want to tell me. Daisy grabbed my hand and said, "Diana, chill. No one can threaten me. I just need to handle some work stuff. I came back to follow up on a news story, but plans changed, so I gotta head back."
Suddenly, I heard a snort nearby. I turned to see David standing there, holding Daisy's suitcase.
"You two?" I asked, confused, glancing between them. But then, a bit of joy crept in. Had David's attitude changed? Had he finally accepted Daisy's feelings? I started imagining what their relationship would be like.
But Daisy cut me off, "Diana, stop. I just asked him to take me to the airport and help with my luggage because Lila had an emergency at the firm. Don't get any ideas. And..." She leaned in and whispered, "I told him you'd be here too; that's why he came. We're just friends now; I don't have feelings for him anymore."
David walked over, looking impatient. "Have you two talked enough? If you don't leave now, you'll miss your flight." His tone was irritable, clearly annoyed by our chatting.
Daisy cheerfully took the suitcase from him, pretending not to care. "Alright, I'm really leaving this time."
She turned to me, "Diana, take care of yourself." Then to David, "Take care of Diana. If anything happens to her, I won't forgive you."
David ruffled my hair, saying coldly, "What could happen to her?" I pushed his hand away, annoyed by his abruptness.
This must have looked funny because Daisy laughed out loud. "Alright, now I'm relieved. It's time. Bye!"
She walked briskly into the airport. Watching her go, I felt a bit emotional. A good friend always had my back, more reliable than any guy.
Until Daisy disappeared into the crowd, David suddenly appeared in front of me. He grabbed my shoulders, his eyes intense, and said, "Diana, I'm waiting for you." Then he walked away quickly, leaving me standing there bewildered and rooted to the spot.
I didn't get why he said that, and I shouted after him, "You're so weird!" Then I walked in the opposite direction. Back at my apartment, I was still thinking about what David had said when I got a call from Anne, "Diana, do you like the gift I sent you?" Her voice made me feel disgusted and irritated. I frowned, wondering what trouble she was planning now.
Before I could respond, Anne hung up, leaving me with that cryptic message. Compared to David, Anne was more terrifying. She was like a ticking time bomb, and I had a feeling it was about to go off. But I had no idea where or what kind of damage it would bring. The danger was approaching, and Daisy was still on the plane. I was alone and had to figure this out myself. Nervously, I opened my computer, my fingers trembling as I clicked the mouse, ready to check online.
Finally, the webpage loaded, and sure enough, I was trending again.
