Chapter 64 I Won't Divorce Him
Edward nodded and headed straight to the farewell hall. Since Edward was cool with it, I followed David to a more private spot. Out of nowhere, David slapped me. "Diana, this is your mom's funeral. What are you doing?" It wasn't a hard slap, but it stung deep.
I looked up at David and smiled. "Of course I know."
I knew why David was mad, and honestly, I was mad at myself too. But I had to suck it up. I used to live under my parents' wing. Now, they were gone, and I had to face the world on my own. David didn't say anything else; he just turned and punched the wall. "Go to your husband."
I figured he must hate me right then, but I couldn't worry about his feelings. I quickly walked over and took Edward's arm. I didn't dare look back at David; I knew if I did, I'd lose it and start crying.
After we got back from the cemetery, David's eyes were red. Just before we parted ways, he came up to me and whispered, "Diana, if you ever need help, remember to come to me."
I smiled and said, "I did come to you, but you did nothing at that time."
David was pissed at my words. He suddenly leaned in, grabbed my shoulders, and asked with bloodshot eyes, "So you went to Edward for help? Why didn't you come to me?"
"He's my husband." As I said that, David looked down. When he looked up again, he asked, "Do you love him that much?"
I nodded. I saw Edward walking towards me from a distance, so I shook off David's hands, raised my voice, and added, "Of course I love him. I love him very much."
"What about me?" David seemed desperate to prove something.
"You're great, but it's never gonna happen for us," I shouted.
"Why?" David's voice was full of anger.
I smiled. "We grew up together. Even though you're tall and handsome now, when I see you, I remember all the embarrassing stuff you did as a kid. We can't be together. Besides, I'm not divorcing Edward."
I walked forward and called out to Edward, "Honey, I'm here."
David turned, saw Edward, and walked away.
Back at the Howard Villa, as soon as the car stopped, Anne rushed over and jumped into Edward's arms.
"Edward, you're back. I missed you so much." Anne clung to Edward like a koala, and he carried her inside. I pretended not to see Anne's affection and walked to my room alone.
"Mrs. Howard, you're back." Melissa respectfully handed me my slippers and took my bag. I saw Edward's slippers at the entrance, obviously placed there by Anne. These were things I used to do, but now Anne did them. In my absence, she had probably already considered herself Mrs. Howard.
After a long, exhausting day, I was starving. I headed to the kitchen to find something to eat. As soon as I walked in, Melissa brought out a bowl of freshly steamed egg custard. "I knew you hadn't eaten all day, so I made your favorite," she said.
Melissa was probably the only one who remembered my preferences. When I was born, I was weak and often sick. Every time I got sick, my mom would make me a bowl of egg custard. Back then, my dad was just starting his business, and we were pretty poor. A bowl of steamed egg was a real treat for me. Even after our family became well-off, I still craved that egg custard whenever I felt down or unwell.
With my bowl in hand, I walked out of the kitchen and saw Anne and Edward already sitting side by side at the dining table. I sat down across from Edward and started eating.
After dinner, not wanting to watch Edward and Anne being all lovey-dovey on the sofa, I followed Melissa back into the kitchen.
"Mrs. Howard," Melissa hesitated. "Since you left, Ms. York has been clinging to Mr. Howard more and more. Even now that you're back, she still sleeps in the same room with him. It's so disrespectful. I can't stand it, even though I'm just a servant."
"Then don't look." At some point, Edward had appeared at the kitchen door. His voice was firm and commanding. Melissa fell silent and started washing dishes.
Edward didn't stay long. He poured a glass of milk for Anne and went back to the living room. From the kitchen door, I saw Anne kneeling behind Edward, giving him a shoulder massage.
"Edward, you must be so tired. Let me give you a massage," Anne said, her fingers working on his shoulders, a flattering smile on her face. "Does this feel good?"
Edward didn't refuse. He turned his head and fed Anne a strawberry.
"The strawberry is so sweet. Thank you," Anne said, then she picked up a strawberry and fed it back to Edward. Their intimacy made it seem like I didn't exist. My lips trembled slightly, and with a self-mocking smile, I walked up to them and said coldly, "You two really have a deep relationship."
Anne shrank behind Edward and said, "Diana, you're so fierce. Edward, you have to protect me!" She laughed after speaking.
Melissa came out of the kitchen with a bowl of medicinal soup, saying, "Mrs. Howard, this is the medicine Mrs. Clara York sent for you today. I'll take it to your bedroom."
Feeling bored, I followed Melissa back to the bedroom. I was still staying in the guest room. The Howard Villa was so big enough that if I wanted, I could go a whole day without seeing Anne.
But I didn't want that. Instead of secretly competing, I decided to bring the competition for Edward into the open.
