Chapter 35 A Married Woman

We were chatting about our childhood and how fast time had flown by. It was crazy to think we could still get together like this.

Before we knew it, the sun was setting.

Nolan said, "Diana, with everything that's been going on, maybe you should take a break from work. . How about you gather some info on your case, like you're defending yourself, and then send it to me? I'll be your defense attorney."

I got what he was saying. There were so many loose ends, and I really didn't have the energy for work. If I defended myself, I could handle my own issues and brush up on my skills. I looked at Lila and David; they were on board with Nolan's idea. I had thought about it too but hadn't brought it up. Now that Nolan mentioned it, I was all in.

David checked his watch, stood up, and stretched. "It's getting late. How about Diana treats us to a big meal tonight?"

David's idea of a big meal would cost a fortune. I didn't have any income right now, and I was living off Edward's credit card. It wouldn't be a big deal for Edward, but it would definitely get his attention.

I joked, "David, you're always trying to mooch off me! I can't afford a big meal right now. Maybe after you give me a raise. I have an appointment, so I gotta go."

"You don't value our friendship at all, so stingy!" David yelled after me.

It wasn't that I didn't want to treat them. With my dad's inheritance, I could easily cover a meal for a few people. But I really did have an appointment tonight, with an old friend, Joshua Thomas.

Joshua was a detective I met during my internship at the law firm. Back then, a defendant I was defending wanted to retaliate against me, so the police assigned Joshua to protect me. He was about my age, full of energy, and always talking about "justice."

I was in a good mood, humming a tune as I got to the barbecue place we agreed on. Joshua saw me from afar, "Hey, Diana! Over here!" He was holding a bunch of skewers, eating with oil dripping from his mouth. He shouted at me without a care in the world.

I walked over, pulled out a chair, and sat across from him. Joshua handed me the menu, still chewing.

"Order whatever you want, it's on me today. The skewers here are awesome. My colleagues and I come here for late-night snacks whenever we work overtime."

Seeing Joshua enjoy his food so much, I ordered some skewers and other dishes. I filled both our beer glasses.

"Diana, are you drinking now?" Joshua asked, still munching away.

I smiled helplessly and joked, "I've hit some bumps lately that I can't handle on my own, so I came to you for help. I remember you being quite the heartthrob back in the day. What happened? You look…worn out.”

Joshua gave a bitter smile. "I'm the captain of the Wind City police department now. It sounds fancy, but no one sees the grind behind it. It's just case after case every day. This isn't fat; it's exhaustion. This is my first meal today." He finished two skewers in one bite.

"It's great you're still on the front lines. I have something to report to you."

Hearing about a case, Joshua instantly perked up.

I told Joshua about my recent experiences, and he had already heard about my case.

"From the evidence left at the scene, it's hard to tell if the suspect was instructed by someone. But the suspect's testimony is full of holes. A thorough interrogation will definitely yield results."

Hearing this, I shared more of my thoughts with Joshua. He listened attentively, occasionally asking for details.

I clinked glasses with Joshua and downed my beer in one gulp.

"Mrs. Howard, what a good mood!" A familiar voice sounded in my ear. I was startled and quickly turned around.

It was Edward. His eyes were dark and unreadable, staring intently at the beer glass in my hand.

I was surprised to see Edward here. Someone as high-class as Edward would never set foot in a place like this. He'd rather starve than eat here.

"Mrs. Howard, you're really not picky, eating any kind of food and drinking with any kind of man." Edward's tone was dripping with sarcasm. Clearly, he only saw Joshua's rough side and didn't notice his true identity.

"Edward, are you stalking me?" His arrival made me very wary. I was even more suspicious that he had been following me.

"I'm here to remind you that you're married. It's late, don't forget to go home," Edward bent down and whispered in my ear.

"Home? Mr. Howard, you must be joking. I want a divorce. Is the Howard Villa still my home? It's enough for you and Anne to be there. I'll move out and make room for Anne!" I didn't hold back and retorted directly.

"You!" Edward probably didn't expect me to embarrass him in public. He was speechless for a moment. After a while, he stood up straight and said in a stern voice, "You don't have to go home, but Anne is still in the hospital. I demand you go to the hospital and apologize to her!"

The true intention behind Edward's actions was finally clear. Whether I went home or where I went didn't matter to him. What mattered was that I hadn't apologized to Anne. He just wanted me to apologize to Anne. My feelings didn't matter to Edward at all.

"I've said many times, I did nothing wrong. I will never apologize to her," I said firmly.

"Fine, but don't forget the divorce agreement is still in my hands. Whether and when you can get a divorce is up to me!"

I didn't expect Edward to use the divorce agreement to threaten me, but I couldn't help but laugh. "You don't want to sign the divorce agreement? Fine, I don't care. I will find another way to stay away from you."
