Chapter 167 I Won't Accept You
I picked up the small cloth bag, feeling its weight, and my curiosity got the best of me. "What's this?" I asked, my eyes lighting up.
Lila gave me a mysterious smile. "This is the special gift I mentioned yesterday. The person who gave it to you wanted to come to the hospital with me to pick you up, but when he heard you were heading back to the Howard Villa, he decided not to. He just asked me to bring this to you. He said you'd understand once you saw it."
I couldn't wait to open the small red cloth bag. Inside was a delicate gemstone pendant that sparkled softly in the sunlight. I picked it up gently, feeling its smooth, warm texture. It was as soft as a baby's skin, almost like it was alive. The pendant had a faint, calming coolness to it.
I frowned, confused, and looked at Lila. "Did he ask you to give this to me?"
Lila nodded seriously. "Diana, I think you should really consider his feelings. You know he treats you differently from everyone else."
I looked down, rubbing the pendant with my fingers. The owner of this pendant was David—the guy who always made my emotions a mess. I knew this pendant was something his grandmother had left him, meant for his future wife.
I looked up, my gaze firm, and pushed the pendant back towards Lila. "Lila, I can't accept this. You have to return it to him."
But she shook her head, her eyes wide. "This is really valuable! If you want to return it, you'll have to do it yourself. I don't want to get involved."
Lila rose from her seat, glancing at her watch with a sense of urgency. "It's getting late. Seeing you in good shape, I can leave with peace of mind. You have no idea how much work is waiting for me back at Stellar Legal Advisors. If you need anything, call me anytime, or you can contact him."
She glanced at the pendant in my hand, her lips curling slightly. "Just rest well. No need to see me out; I can leave on my own."
After Lila left, I sat quietly on the sofa, staring at the pendant, lost in thought. Despite David's recent kindness, the memories of his role in my childhood torment still stoked an unquenchable fire of anger in my heart.
I knew David had Lila bring me the gemstone pendant to show his feelings, to tell me that if I left Edward, he'd take care of me and my child. But seriously, that seemed so unrealistic! Not to mention my grudge against David, how could the Wilson Family, who was traditional and valued reputation, accept a divorced daughter-in-law with a kid?
Plus, the Howard family had deep ties with the Wilson Family. If David really married me, it would disgrace the Wilson Family, something they'd never allow.
No way, I couldn't accept this pendant. I had to return it to David ASAP. With that thought, I grabbed my phone and quickly dialed David's number.
The call connected fast, and his familiar voice came through, "Diana, did you get the gift I asked Lila to bring you? Have you made up your mind already?" He sounded so relaxed, like he was sure he'd won.
I frowned, confused. "Made up my mind about what?" I asked.
"Diana, leave him and be my girlfriend," David's tone turned serious, and there was a firmness in his words I couldn't ignore.
"I know you won't be happy with him. Whatever he can give you, I can give you more," he continued, trying to convince me.
"Enough." I cut him off, my tone firm. "I'm pregnant with Edward's child. I can't divorce him. Please stop with these unrealistic thoughts."
David's voice was full of frustration. "Why are you so stubborn? What's so great about Edward that makes you cling to him? You're only hurting yourself over and over again!" He was almost shouting, his emotions a bit out of control.
I took a deep breath, my tone resolute. "Because he's my husband, the man I chose to spend my life with."
"But you chose wrong. He's not the one who can make you happy. Even if you have his child, he won't cherish you," David said, clearly biased against Edward.
"And you think you're the right one?" I sneered, retorting.
"Diana, I promise you, I will treat you well for a lifetime and love your child as my own," David said urgently.
Hearing this, I couldn't help but laugh. "You're willing to raise someone else's child? Do you think it's that simple?"
"As long as it's your child, I'll treat it as my own. Suddenly becoming a father isn't a bad thing," David spoke lightly, but deep down he knew that, under the pressure from the traditional Wilson family, he would eventually face the same issues as Edward when it came to continuing the family line.
I gritted my teeth, making up my mind. "Stop dreaming. I won't accept you. I don't want to hear any more of this. I don't like you at all," I said bluntly. With that, I hung up the phone without hesitation and quickly blocked David's number.
I was a decisive person. Once I made a decision, I didn't waver, especially when it came to matters of the heart. To me, David was just someone trying to mess up my life, and I wasn't going to let him succeed.
For the next few days, I stayed home, recuperating quietly. Luckily, I recovered well and soon regained my strength.
But man, the days alone were really boring. I was thinking about going back to work at Stellar Legal Advisors, so I called Lila several times. Each time, though, I only got a busy signal.
