Chapter 14 Suffocation Underwater
I was sitting in the dark, feeling totally down. Outside, Edward's voice was getting more and more worked up as he kept banging on the door.
Someone must've called the cops, because now they were out there talking with Edward.
The soundproofing was too good; I couldn't catch a word. My hangover made my head feel like it was about to explode.
Edward knocked again, "Diana, let's talk."
Before the cops showed up, he was trying to guess the password but kept failing.
If he cared even a bit, he'd have figured out my password by now.
"If you don't open the door, we'll have to call a locksmith," the cop said, polite but firm.
I heard someone making a call outside; probably the cops calling the locksmith.
I didn't want the house Mason renovated to get messed up, so I opened the door.
The cops rushed in and kicked the fruit knife out of my hand. I stumbled and hit the floor.
"Mr. Howard, we can't get involved in your family matters, so we'll be leaving now," the cop said as they left.
I thought I'd cry when I saw Edward, but I was surprisingly clear-headed. I knew Edward never liked me, and I had no leverage to mess with him.
Edward squatted down, looking indifferent, "Mia called Clara, begging me to bring you home. What kind of drama are you two pulling?"
"This is my home," I retorted, my voice laced with bitterness. "As for the Howard mansion, Anne is more than enough."
"Still mad at Anne?" Edward grabbed my collar and yanked me up. Standing up too fast made me dizzy, and my stomach churned. He pressed me against the wall. "Think whatever you want, but don't mess with my family." He really stressed the word "family."
"You should know that marriages in wealthy families are never about love. You don't deserve my love." His voice was low and cold, and my heart sank.
My hair was a mess on my face; yeah, I didn't deserve Edward's love.
I reached back and turned on the light by the door, letting Edward see more clearly.
He was stunned for a moment and then let go of me.
My stomach churned again, and I ran to the bathroom, hugging the toilet and puking my guts out.
After flushing, I saw Edward standing at the bathroom door, just staring at me.
He was just watching, not planning to help.
"Don't get the wrong idea; I'm not pregnant. Just had a bit too much to drink today." I forced a smile.
I must've looked awful because I saw the disgust in Edward's eyes.
"I'm gonna take a shower. Does Mr. Howard plan to watch?" I rubbed my throbbing head and pulled off my loose shirt, leaving just a lace bra as I started to fill the tub.
"Or has Mr. Howard been drugged again? Need me to help you out?" I took off my skirt and sat in the tub.
Edward suddenly leaned over the edge. I thought he was gonna kiss me and closed my eyes, resigned.
Edward snorted coldly, his breath behind my ear making me shiver.
"Who do you think you are? If Mia hadn't made a scene with my parents, do you think I'd even care about you?"
Edward's words cut deep. All his tenderness was reserved for Anne; there was no room for me in his heart.
Then his phone rang with that special ringtone for Anne's video calls.
My heart sank.
"Anne," Edward answered quickly.
"Edward, did you find Diana?"
"Yeah, I found her." His voice was still cold.
"It's thundering outside, and I'm scared alone in the villa."
"Anne, I'll be back soon."
"It’s over, Edward," I said, my voice flat. "I’ll explain to Mia. As for your family, you can explain yourself. Now go back to Anne." I gestured towards the door.
"Diana, are you with Edward? Edward, I want to say something to Diana."
Edward handed me the phone. In the video, Anne was wearing a white camisole, clearly braless. No wonder Edward's eyes had been shifty when he answered.
Anne adjusted her bangs in front of the camera, looking both innocent and seductive. Even I, as a woman, couldn't help but take a few more glances.
"Wow, are Diana and Edward taking a bath together? How exciting! Unlike me, all alone and scared on a stormy night."
I was mortified, my cheeks instantly turning red. "Anne, it's not what you think." My voice was weak and trembling, not knowing how to explain this awkward situation.
Edward snatched the phone back. "Alright, Anne, wait for me at home. I'll be back soon."
He walked out of the bathroom.
"Close the door for me," I said flatly.
Edward hesitated for a moment but then closed the door.
I sank lower into the tub, letting the warm water gradually cover my body.
I didn't know if Edward had left; I closed my eyes and ignored everything.
As the alcohol took over, I gradually fell asleep.
In my dream, I went back to the day I married Edward. He kissed me on the lawn. I was happy but felt a sense of suffocation.
I was awakened by a loud crash, finding my entire body submerged in the tub, that damn suffocating feeling.
A strong will to survive drove me to climb out of the tub, but I couldn't find a grip.
I saw Edward's distorted face above the water, desperately reaching out to him.
''Edward, save me!'' I screamed, but no sound came out as I choked.
Edward didn't pull me out of the tub; he stepped in and kissed me underwater.
I got a bit of oxygen from Edward's mouth, tasting his usual mouthwash.
Desperate for more oxygen, I kissed Edward back fiercely.
My hands wrapped around Edward's back, holding his shoulders tightly. Taking advantage of Edward's need to breathe, we both surfaced.
I lay on the edge of the tub, gasping for air, feeling a chill on my chest. Looking down, I saw my bra had been washed away, and my breasts were bouncing with my rapid heartbeat. My face instantly flushed.
Edward was still straddling me, his dick already hard and pressing against me. "Kissing so passionately, and you say you can't live with me? Without me, you'd have drowned here today, and no one would know!" Edward said.
