Chapter 338 Even with Money, One Should Not Be Wasteful
I grabbed the phone, and Amy's frantic voice came through. "Ms. Cooper, you need to get back here ASAP. There's a woman named Anne causing a huge scene, demanding to see you. She won't leave no matter what we say."
Suddenly, a burst of noise erupted from the receiver. I could hear a few shouts, and it was definitely Anne's voice.
"Where's Diana? Get her out here! I need answers today!" she yelled.
I could hear my colleagues rushing to intervene, but Anne's voice cut through the chaos.
Edward, who had overheard the commotion, looked at me with a puzzled expression.
Not wanting Edward to know too much, I made an excuse, "There's an urgent matter at the office I need to handle right away."
Edward, understanding, nodded and stepped aside.
My heart pounded as I quickly said goodbye to Edward, composed myself, and hurried back to the office.
As soon as I reached the Cooper Group building, I could hear Anne shouting at the top of her lungs. "Diana, you finally show up! You promised to bail me out, but you left me stranded at the police station. What do you have to say for yourself?"
With Anne's loud voice, everyone entering and leaving the building turned to look.
I frowned and responded impatiently, "Anne, stop making a scene. I don't owe you anything, and I don't need to explain myself to you."
"Is this what you call sincerity?" Anne shot back, clearly not satisfied with my response.
I took a deep breath and tried to explain calmly, "I had important matters to handle at the company, and I did arrange for Lila to take care of your bail."
"Don't give me those excuses." Anne crossed her arms and sneered, "Lila is your lawyer, right? Where is she? I never saw her. You're just brushing me off. Don't pretend to be kind; I won't buy it."
Suppressing my anger, I said coldly, "I have no reason to lie to you. I'll call Lila right now and clear this up."
I quickly pulled out my phone and dialed Lila's number. The phone rang several times, but no one answered. Frustrated, I called again and again, but still no response. Lila was always reliable and had never missed a call before. A sense of unease washed over me, as if something bad had happened.
Anne, however, continued to badger me, "What's wrong? Can't get through? Are you out of excuses now? I think you planned this to mess with me. Stop making excuses."
Desperate, I cut her off, "Enough. If Lila isn't answering, something urgent must have come up. I don't have time to argue with you. Once I figure out what's going on with Lila, I'll explain everything to you."With that, I turned and headed into the building.
Anne wasn't about to let it go and quickly blocked my path. "No way. You have to give me an explanation today, or you won't get past me."
I sidestepped Anne and said icily, "Anne, if you keep causing trouble, don't expect any help from me in the future. I need to contact Lila. If something's happened to her, can you take responsibility?"
I walked briskly into the building and got into the elevator.
Maybe my tone was too harsh, and Anne didn't follow me immediately.
I thought I had finally shaken her off and could focus on more important matters. But not long after, my office door was flung open with a loud bang.
Startled, I looked up to see Anne storming in, shouting. "Diana, you can't just brush this off. You need to compensate me for the delayed bail and the emotional distress I suffered at the police station."
She marched over to my desk and plopped herself down heavily, nearly knocking over a picture frame.
I put down the phone, steadied the frame, and said sternly, "Anne, enough. I've told you repeatedly, something must have happened to Lila. I'm trying to figure it out. But here you are, making a fuss over something trivial. This is unreasonable."
"I don't care. This is your fault, and you need to take responsibility." Anne's voice was shrill and almost painful to hear. "You're rich. This money is nothing to you."
I let out a cold laugh. "Just because I have money doesn't mean I can waste it. I've helped you out with money many times, but not to encourage this kind of behavior."
I added, "If you want money, earn it yourself. From now on, I won't give you a single cent for nothing."
Anne's eyes widened, and she raised her voice. "Diana, I can't believe how heartless you've become! Don't forget; you begged me to come out because Skylar needed me."
I almost laughed at her words, but instead, I responded, "It's not about being heartless; it's about you being irresponsible."
I stood up, looked her straight in the eye, and said slowly, "You're not a child anymore. You can't keep relying on others. If you want a good life, get a job and earn your own money. Stop dreaming about easy money."
"Get a job? It's not that simple." Anne pouted, her disdain evident. "Working for someone else is tough and doesn't pay enough. I refuse to do it."
I stepped closer, staring into her greedy eyes, and said firmly, "You want money without working for it? That's not how the world works. If you keep this attitude, no one can help you. I'm not giving you any money today. I suggest you find a job and start over."
I paused and added, "If all you care about is money, then we have nothing more to say. Don't show up in front of me again."
