Chapter 362 He Reviews on Behalf of Nicholas?
The day of the meeting came up fast, and David and I strolled into the fancy club Nicholas had chosen, our nerves on edge.
As we walked into the decked-out private room, my eyes zeroed in on the woman next to Nicholas. It was Anne!
She was rocking this pink, puffy dress that made her look like she was being swallowed by a giant flower.
Her hair was done up in playful pigtails hanging over her shoulders, with the ends curled and topped with fluffy bunny clips.
But when I looked closer, I saw the fine lines on her forehead and at the corners of her eyes. Her cheeks were overly plumped, and even the thick pink blush couldn't hide the unnatural look. She had this innocent smile, but on her aging face, it seemed out of place.
David and I froze, our faces showing pure shock. David couldn't help but whisper, "How is it her?"
I was just as confused. The last time I saw Anne, I had sent her abroad after she broke up with Nicholas. How was she back with him now?
Anne noticed our expressions and her smile grew even more smug. She practically draped herself over Nicholas, her slender fingers playing with his tie as she spoke in a sweet voice, "Nicholas, these are the people you wanted to see."
As she spoke, she deliberately leaned her head on Nicholas's shoulder, her eyes provocatively scanning David and me.
Nicholas seemed unfazed by Anne's behavior, simply raising his hand to gesture for us to sit down. "Have a seat," he said.
David and I exchanged a glance, then respectfully greeted Nicholas before slowly sitting down on the sofa.
Anne, however, wasn't about to miss the chance to show off. As she peeled fruit for Nicholas, she sneered, "I thought it was someone important, making Nicholas come out personally."
She shot us a disdainful look, her fingers sliding down Nicholas's arm, clearly reveling in her favored status.
David's fists clenched slightly at his sides, a flash of anger crossing his face, but he held back.
I couldn't stand Anne's arrogance any longer and said coldly, "Anne, we're here to discuss serious matters. Save your theatrics; no one cares about the role you're playing here."
Anne's expression soured momentarily, but she swiftly returned to her sharp-tongued demeanor. She retorted, "Don't act so high and mighty. If it weren't for Nicholas, do you honestly think you'd be able to speak to me like this?"
"Enough," Nicholas suddenly interjected, his gaze warning Anne.
Anne immediately fell silent, though she still glared at me defiantly and snuggled closer to Nicholas.
Nicholas turned to David and said, "David, you know why you're here. The Wilson family's current situation—how do you plan to handle it?"David straightened up, looking sincere. "Mr. Jackson, I know the Wilson family has messed up big time, especially my brother Lanny, who hurt Lila badly. I'm really sorry for what he did, and I apologize to everyone affected. The Wilson family is ready to face the consequences, but I can't stand to see our family's hard work go to waste or innocent family members suffer."
Nicholas leaned back on the sofa, arms crossed, and scoffed. "Can't stand it? Did your father ever think this day would come with his ruthless business tactics? Times have changed. Why should I help you, especially when Lanny hurt someone from the Jackson family?"
David looked remorseful, standing and bowing slightly. "I can't deny my father's and Lanny's wrongdoings, but I'm not like them. I've always tried to make amends for their mistakes. Yet I can't turn things around alone. Mr. Jackson, I promise that if we get through this, the Wilson family will repay your kindness and strictly adhere to ethical business practices."
Anne, still clinging to Nicholas, couldn't resist chiming in. "Nice words, but who knows if they're true? The Wilson family isn't known for honesty."
David glanced at Anne, a flicker of annoyance in his eyes, but he restrained himself from responding.
Nicholas shot Anne a look, and she pouted but fell silent.
The tension in the room was thick when the door suddenly opened, and a young man walked in. He glanced around and greeted everyone with a smile.
Nicholas acknowledged him with a nod.
Seeing the man, my heart skipped a beat. It was Jeffrey!
I opened my mouth to call out his name, but my throat was dry, and no sound escaped.
Jeffrey's gaze briefly swept over me without stopping, and he casually strolled to a single sofa, sitting down with one leg crossed over the other.
"Jeffrey!" I finally found my voice, but it trembled uncontrollably.
Jeffrey acted as if he hadn't heard me, turning to Nicholas and speaking calmly. "Nicholas, you called me here today. What's the good news?" His tone was so casual.
Nicholas leaned back, rhythmically tapping the armrest, and smiled. "Jeffrey, you're always in a hurry. It's not exactly good news; it's just some business matters I need you to review," he said.
With that, Nicholas's gaze lingered on David and me for a moment, a knowing smile on his lips.
Anne's eyes lit up when she saw Jeffrey. She abandoned her previous sharpness, swaying over to Jeffrey and speaking in a sweet voice. "Jeffrey, why are you so late? We've been waiting for you."
She reached out and lightly touched Jeffrey's shoulder.
Jeffrey patted her hand with a smile, and Anne returned to Nicholas's side.
But throughout, Jeffrey never looked my way. I couldn't understand why he was pretending not to know me or his relationship with Anne.
Nicholas then turned to Anne, as if remembering something, and asked indulgently, "Sweetheart, is there anything special you want lately? I'm sure David would be happy to oblige."
