Chapter 250 How Could She Come Here?
After a long day at work, I dragged my tired self back to my apartment.
As soon as I opened the door, Edward popped out of the kitchen, wearing an apron and flashing a somewhat sheepish smile. "Hey, Diana. You're home. Rough day? I made your favorite dishes."
I never would've imagined this scene a while back. Edward used to be completely clueless about anything domestic. The kitchen was like a foreign land to him; he couldn't even make a simple sandwich, let alone cook a decent meal. But now, here he was, standing in the smoky kitchen, handling pots and pans like a pro.
Thinking about the news I got earlier today, I just responded with nodding, my eyes lingering on his face a bit longer, trying to pick up on any hidden emotions. He seemed to sense something, his smile faltering slightly, a flicker of unease in his eyes, but he quickly pulled himself together and said softly, "Go wash up and get ready for dinner."
I knew deep down that Edward's recent attentiveness was because I was carrying his child. What he truly cared about was probably the baby inside me, not me as a person.
Meanwhile, Lila and Lucas had settled into a calm routine after their whirlwind romance. Seeing Lila in such a state brought me comfort, I knew she hadn't lost herself in love like I had. As Lila mentioned before, Lucas, despite being Nicholas's illegitimate son, wasn't a slacker. He had his own ambitions and talents. Stellar Legal Advisors was now fully under Lila's management.
Life had returned to a peaceful routine, but my heart couldn't find true tranquility. The most heartbreaking thing was that after Aria's death, it was as if she had vanished from the world. No one mentioned her anymore, not even a proper funeral was held.
Back when Aria's parents died in a car accident, the Howard family had helped organize a decent funeral for them, doing what little they could. But now, with Aria's tragic death, Edward did nothing for her, as if her name had never existed. This fact clearly reflected Edward's coldness and indifference.
At this moment, I couldn't afford to be distracted by personal emotional entanglements. As my health improved, I was able to focus more on handling matters at the Cooper Group.
Thanks to Theo's meticulous management, the daily operations of the Cooper Group were progressing smoothly. We were receiving great news on market expansion.
The innovative products and services we launched for our clients quickly made a mark in the industry, capturing a significant market share and drawing the attention of our competitors. Amidst this thriving scene, I knew I couldn't afford to slack off.
The Cooper Group carried too many expectations and responsibilities for me.
Early in the morning, with the first light of dawn, I got up. I was thinking about the bidding work Theo mentioned yesterday and planned to head over to handle it as soon as possible.
As I was getting ready to leave, I heard a faint noise coming from the kitchen. At first, I thought it was Edward trying to be attentive again by making breakfast—he had been doing that occasionally. So, I didn't pay much attention and was about to leave to avoid any further entanglements with him.
However, as I reached the door to change my shoes, I caught a glimpse of a pair of high-end custom leather shoes on the shoe rack. My heart skipped a beat, and alarm bells went off in my head.
These shoes, both in size and style, couldn't possibly belong to Edward or me.
A sense of unease washed over me. I paused, thought for a moment, and decided to quietly head back and approach the kitchen door.
Peeking through the partially open glass door, I finally saw who was inside, and my heart sank. What was she doing here?
At that moment, the person in the kitchen seemed to sense my presence. She turned her head slightly, and it was Clara.
She flashed a seemingly friendly smile and said, "Diana, Hayden heard you're expecting Edward's child and was overjoyed. He couldn't even care about his own discomfort and insisted I come to take care of you."
As she spoke, she carefully took a steaming bowl of soup from the stove and walked towards me.
Seeing this, I instinctively stepped aside, my eyes full of caution.
Even though my feelings for Edward had long since died, the child I was carrying was still my child.
After everything I had been through, I couldn't allow anyone to harm my baby. Remembering Clara's previous deceitful tricks and heartless actions, I couldn't help but be wary of her.
Clara, of course, understood my wariness.
As if anticipating my reaction, she calmly placed the bowl on the counter, then turned to take a spoon and skillfully served herself a bowl of soup. She drank it slowly in front of me, seemingly to prove her "harmlessness."
Although she drank the soup without any signs of poisoning, I remained on guard. Her seemingly casual gesture only made me more suspicious of her intentions, as if she had a deeper scheme in mind. I clenched my fists, ready to respond to whatever she might do next.
"Diana, you're carrying the most precious person in the family now. Why would I harm you? Even Anne doesn't come to disturb your life anymore. Why would I hurt you?"
I never expected Clara to use Anne as an excuse—Anne was her own daughter.
I didn't respond directly. Instead, I casually glanced at my watch and said, "I have urgent matters to attend to today. If you have nothing else, please leave."
Clara hesitated awkwardly, then smiled faintly and replied, "If you have work to do, go ahead. I'll clean up the house for you. You and Edward are both busy with work, so leave these small tasks to me."
