Chapter 62 Only He Can Give Me What I Want

The shelves were packed with business and law books, the kind Edward had been using lately. I didn't see anything from his childhood. Maybe Clara was happy seeing her adopted son and biological daughter getting along, but I couldn't handle how close Edward and Anne were.

I touched a photo frame on the desk. It had a picture of Edward and Anne as kids. It was the only thing in the study that had anything to do with Anne.

My phone rang, snapping me back to reality. I jumped, and the photo frame fell. I quickly picked it up, and the photo slipped out. I noticed some writing on it, probably from Edward when he was a kid. It just said, "To my dearest Anne." I put the photo back and answered the call.

"Diana, I heard you're back?" It was David. I glanced at the screen to confirm.

"Yeah, I got to Wind City yesterday afternoon," I replied.

"How's your mom?" David didn't know Mia had passed away and was still asking about her.

"She passed away." My voice shook, and my nose tingled.

I thought I wouldn't be sad about Mia's death, but when I found out she had visited the Howard Mansion multiple times not just for business but to talk with Clara about making my life with Edward better, I felt a pang of guilt and sadness.

David was shocked. "How could that be?" he asked. "When's the funeral?"

"The day after tomorrow. I just got back and am getting things ready," I said, trying to keep it together.

"Okay, I'll help you with the arrangements. Take care of yourself," David said, showing more concern than usual.

"Thanks, David. But Edward's already helping me with it," I said, feeling a bit of warmth.

"Edward?" David sounded uneasy.

"Yeah, he's helping me. We've set the funeral for the southern suburbs. It'll be simple," I explained.

"I see. I'll be there. She was always kind to me when we were kids," David said. He was right. Whenever David and I fought, he'd get in trouble at home and come to my house to complain. Mia would comfort him, cook for him, and send him off with snacks. Despite our fights, he always respected and loved my parents.

"Diana, let's meet up," David said before hanging up.

We met up at the café downstairs from his office. It was rush hour, and as I sat by the big window, watching the busy traffic outside, I got lost in my thoughts. In just a few months, this city felt so different to me. I never realized how lively and bustling the streets could be in the evening. Traffic Cops were directing traffic, delivery guys were weaving through the crowd, and people were rushing home. None of it seemed to matter to me. I had no job, no home, and was just crashing at Edward's place, pretending I needed him.

I was so deep in thought that I didn't notice David sneaking up behind me. He tapped my forehead, like he always did, and said, "Diana, you look exhausted." His tone was softer than usual, full of concern. How could I not look worn out when I had nothing left?

I forced a smile, which probably looked worse than crying, and David gave me a weird look. Finally, he asked, "Diana, did you come back just for Mrs. Taylor's funeral?"

I shook my head. "No, I plan to stay in Wind City."

It wasn't that I had a strong attachment to this place, but I sold everything except a small apartment to pay for Mia's treatment. If I didn't stay in Wind City, I had nowhere else to go.

"Diana, don't hold it in. If you need to cry, you can lean on my shoulder." He bit his lip, looking determined.

I shook my head. "I've run out of tears."

"Are you still living in the apartment Mr. Cooper left you?" David asked, concerned.

"I'm staying at the Howard Villa." I stirred my coffee absentmindedly.

David looked surprised. "The Howard Villa? You're still with him?"

"Of course, Edward is my husband." I looked up at David's face, which showed disbelief.

David pressed on, "Diana, didn't you say you wanted to leave him? Didn't you want a divorce? Why are you back with him now?" He bombarded me with questions.

I took a sip of coffee and replied calmly, "I used to have my mom and the Cooper Group, so I wasn't afraid of anything. I could live the life I wanted. But now, I have nothing. Edward is my support. How could I divorce him?"

David snapped, "But you still have me, don't you? I'll always be here for you."

A sudden anger flared up inside me.

"Maybe we've had a lot of disagreements, but seeing you like this, how could I bear to bully you anymore? That would be inhumane!" David's voice was raised, and I couldn't read his emotions.

People around us started to stare. Not wanting to cause a scene, I lowered my voice and said, "I can take care of myself."

"Look at you now. How can you say you're taking good care of yourself?" David's words were still sharp.

I didn't want to argue with him anymore. I stood up to leave, but David called out, "Diana, whatever Edward can give you, so can I. If you're not happy with him, come to me."

'What I want is the Cooper Group in Edward's hands; only he can give it to me,' I thought silently.

Leaving the café, I still couldn't calm down. I hadn't told anyone else about my return, so David must have found out through Edward.

I planned to visit Lila, but she had just received a breach of contract compensation from David and had flown off to see her favorite singer's concert. With no other choice, I returned to the Howard Villa.

The villa was brightly lit, but only Melissa was home. Edward and Anne hadn't returned. I forced myself not to think about anything.
