Chapter 323 Skylar is Fine, But...
Melissa spotted us right away and rushed over.
"My baby!" She reached out and gently touched Skylar's face, her eyes full of worry.
I handed Skylar to Melissa, who cradled her carefully, showering her with kisses.
Skylar woke up from the kisses, and when she saw Melissa, her little mouth quivered like she was about to cry again.
Melissa quickly soothed her, "Hey, sweetie, don't cry. I'm here."
I reminded Melissa, "Melissa, you should get her checked out."
Melissa snapped back to reality, nodding quickly. "Yeah, let's get her checked."
She carried Skylar into the examination room.
While we waited, Alaric paced back and forth in the hospital hallway.
After a while, he suddenly stopped and asked, "Is Edward also being treated here?"
I was taken aback, unsure why Alaric was asking about this. After a brief pause, I replied, "He had been taking medication to control his emotions for a long time, but he ended up abusing it, which led to seizures. That night, he had a seizure while he was with Skylar and passed out in an alley. Someone found him and brought him here."
Alaric frowned, looking regretful, and asked, "I remember Edward used to be a rising star in the business world. How did he end up like this?"
I sighed and explained, "He probably didn't want things to turn out this way either. Edward was decisive in his career, but he was very indecisive when it came to his family. After his father passed away, his stepmother and Anne coveted his inheritance. They set traps and caused trouble for him, even pushing the Howard Group to the brink for their own gain."
Alaric looked at the light above the examination room door and asked, "So he turned to drugs to cope with the stress?"
I shook my head and said, "His mental stress did increase, but the drugs weren't his choice. His stepmother and Anne gave them to him under the guise of nutritional supplements. Over time, he became dependent on them, leading to his current state."
Alaric nodded thoughtfully and then said gently, "That's really unfortunate. But you shouldn't have left Skylar with someone who has health issues."
I knew he was concerned about Skylar and wasn't blaming me.
I shook my head helplessly and remarked, "I didn't know his condition was this severe. It only got worse after our divorce. That night, there was supposed to be a bodyguard with Skylar, but Edward wanted to be alone with her and sent the bodyguard away. Maybe he really regretted his actions."
After that, none of us spoke, our gazes fixed intently on the closed door.
Finally, the door to the examination room opened.
Melissa came out holding Skylar, following the doctor. Alaric and I quickly stepped forward.
The doctor smiled and said, "Skylar's fine, just a bit shaken up. She might be anxious and have trouble sleeping for a while. Just comfort her and stay close to make her feel safe. If she gets too upset, soothe her gently."Hearing this, I felt a huge wave of relief wash over me, and my tense body relaxed instantly. Alaric also let out a deep sigh, a look of relief spreading across his face.
Melissa, who had been worried sick, finally relaxed and patted her chest. "Thank goodness, she's okay."
I quickly took Skylar from Melissa, holding her tightly and kissing her little face. "It's okay, sweetie." Skylar clung to my clothes, her eyes still filled with fear, but she began to relax when she realized I was holding onto her.
Just then, a commotion erupted at the end of the hallway.
"Make way!" Someone shouted urgently.
I looked up instinctively and saw a group of medical staff rushing by with a stretcher.
We quickly moved to the side, pressing our backs against the cold wall to make way for the urgent scene.
Skylar, who had just calmed down, was startled by the sudden chaos. She trembled, her lollipop falling to the ground, and she started crying again, clutching my collar tightly, trying to bury herself in my arms.
Alaric quickly shielded us, his eyes filled with concern as he monitored the surroundings to prevent us from getting caught in the chaos.
Skylar's sudden crying shattered my heart. I looked at Melissa and said, "Melissa, it's too loud here for Skylar. Please take her to the garden; it's quieter there, and she can gather herself."
Melissa nodded, gently patting Skylar's back and soothing her as she hurried towards the garden.
As the group with the stretcher passed by, I was shocked to see Fiona lying on it. She was pale as a sheet, her body curled up and trembling, her face contorted in pain. Her once-pregnant belly was now noticeably deflated, and there was a large, alarming bloodstain spreading beneath her. It was a hemorrhage!
David stood close to the stretcher, his eyes reddened with tears that streamed down his face, falling onto the bloodstains pooling beneath Fiona and spreading further.
His eyes never left Fiona, his steps unsteady as he kept muttering, "Fiona, you have to hang on."
Seeing this, I couldn't help but feel moved.
David looked both worried and terrified, oblivious to everything around him, including us standing nearby.
"Isn't that your friend? What happened to her?" Alaric asked in a low, tense voice.
I swallowed hard, my throat dry. "I don't know, but it looks serious." Before I could finish, Fiona was wheeled into the emergency room. David tried to follow but was stopped by a nurse.
He exclaimed, "Please save her, save my baby."
After the emergency room doors closed, David's body continued to tremble violently. He pounded the wall with his fists, shouting, "Why is this happening!" His anguished cries echoed through the empty hallway.
