Chapter 43 The Heated Kiss in the Basement
"Get out!" Edward's voice was low but packed a punch, his Adam's apple bobbing as he spoke.
Anne hesitated for a second before stepping outside. The look she shot me was like she wanted to tear me apart.
I curled up on the cold floor, the chill biting through my thin clothes. Every breath hurt, and my body was covered in bruises, but the worst pain was in my heart.
A weak light filtered through a narrow vent, barely lighting up a small area. Darkness clung to me like a shadow, ready to swallow me whole. Edward finally let go, and I gasped for air, searching for a sliver of hope in the endless dark, but all I found was cold and fear.
My heart tightened, and fear spread like wildfire. It was just Edward and me here; I couldn't even imagine what was coming next.
Edward stood in the only light, his figure outlined by the dim glow. With the light behind him, I couldn't see his face, but I could feel his anger.
He walked towards me, each step pounding on my heart.
"Diana, why are you always so stubborn?" His voice echoed with anger in the small space.
I looked at him, my eyes full of hurt. "What did I do wrong? Why are you treating me like this?"
A flash of anger crossed Edward's eyes. "You hurt Anne and want to leave me. Have you thought about the consequences?"
I bit my lip, trying not to cry. "I didn't hurt Anne; she's the one who came between us."
Edward grabbed my chin. "Enough! She's just my sister. Get those filthy thoughts out of your head!"
He let go and turned away, like he couldn't stand to look at me anymore. I watched his back, feeling hopeless. How did we end up like this? To everyone else, we seemed so in love, so happy. But behind the scenes, it was all anger and pain.
But maybe, just maybe, there was something else beneath Edward's anger. Could it be… guilt?
Time seemed to freeze. We both stayed silent, the air thick with tension. I tried to find a hint of warmth, a trace of love in Edward's face, but all I saw was anger and coldness.
I closed my eyes, thinking back to Mason's birthday party. We held hands, toasted with friends and family, everyone envying me for marrying such a great guy. But the pain and bitterness behind it all were like shards of glass, cutting into my heart.
Edward turned to look at me again. His eyes softened a bit, and beneath the pride and anger, there seemed to be a hint of hidden heartache.
"Do you know how disappointed I am in you?" Edward's voice trembled slightly.
I looked at him, and finally, the tears started flowing. "I didn't want this either. In the four years we've been married, I never thought it would come to this. I just wanted a better life. How did we end up like this?"
Edward was quiet for a moment, then slowly sat down next to me. His movements were gentle, like he was afraid I'd bolt. "Diana, I'm sorry." His voice was so low I almost didn't hear it.
I was stunned. Did he just apologize? Edward, the president of the Howard Group, actually apologized to me? For a second, I saw the gentle, considerate man he used to be.
Edward lowered his head, his fingers playing with the hem of my dress, then slipping his hand under it, moving up my leg. "But you made me so angry. Diana, can we just… go back to how things were?"
I turned my head away, not wanting to look at him. But out of the corner of my eye, I couldn't help but glance at him.
Edward slowly leaned closer until his cheek brushed against mine. In the dim basement, a different kind of intimacy filled the air. His hand gently caressed my cheek, tenderly stroking behind my ear.
I wanted to push him away, but Edward pulled me into his arms, and his lips gently covered mine. The kiss was tender yet passionate. His hand cradled the back of my head, and I leaned into his arm. Edward's kiss deepened, his tongue gently prying open my lips, exploring the sweetness of my mouth. His kiss grew more fervent, and I couldn't break free, so I responded to his passion. His eyelashes brushed lightly against my cheek. Our breaths intertwined, and the sound of our heartbeats was especially clear in the silent space.
As Edward kissed me intently, he began to tear at my clothes.
"No." I put my hands on my chest, but he easily brushed them aside. The wounds from Anne's scratches were still bleeding, and I couldn't help but gasp in pain.
"Is that what you really want?" Edward chuckled. His lips covered mine again. "Diana, admit it!" he whispered in my ear. "You can't live without me. Only I can give you the life you want." His voice was magnetic.
My heart trembled, as if I understood what was about to happen.
But I didn't want it. I used all my strength to push him away. "No, I don't want to do it here."
"Not here? Then where do you want to go? Back to the villa with me or to your apartment?" Despite his words, Edward didn't stop his actions. "Don't you like this? Don't you want to unlock new scenes?"
"Edward, we're getting a divorce. You can't do this to me." I almost pleaded, "Edward, you can't do this."
"Then who can? David or Nolan? Or that fat police chief, what was his name? Joshua? He seems awfully eager to please you." His voice dripped with disdain.
I lowered my head, praying that Joshua wouldn't be dragged into this mess. "He's just a friend," I whispered."A friend? What kind of friend would risk his career for you?" Edward's tone was full of disdain.
I lowered my head, praying in my heart that Joshua wouldn't be affected by me.
