Chapter 195 Official Pursuit
So there I was, enjoying my drink, when Lila suddenly goes, "Diana, you really owe someone a thank you."
I looked at her, a bit puzzled.
She leaned in, lowering her voice like she was about to spill some big secret, "It was David who went to Eric. That's how Eric found out the real reason behind Alice's divorce."
"Why would he do that?" I asked, still trying to wrap my head around it.
Lila gave my shoulder a gentle pat and said, "He did it for you. David knew your divorce would blow up online, so he got Eric to help sway public opinion. And guess what? Eric's fans are all backing you up now." She looked pretty pleased with herself.
I felt a bit conflicted and said, "But I promised Alice I wouldn't say anything."
Lila shot back, "You didn't break your promise; David did. And come on, Alice is gone. Do you really want Eric stuck in the past because of her infidelity?"
She had a point. If no one had told Eric the truth, he might have been stuck in that emotional mess forever.
I nodded and said, "I guess it's good that people still believe in love."
Lila took a sip of her drink and sighed, "I wish I could find my true love. That would be awesome."
I smiled and said, "You will, for sure."
We clinked our glasses and downed our drinks. When we stepped out of the hotel, the lights were already on. The place looked great, and there was a big square right outside, buzzing with activity.
Suddenly, there was a shout from the crowd, and fireworks lit up the sky. Everyone was in awe, and I started snapping pictures. Lila was all excited, "Diana, today must be your lucky day. Even the fireworks are celebrating with you. Not many people see divorce as a good thing, but today, everyone's cheering for you. It's heartwarming."
As the fireworks ended, I was about to leave when the big screen across the square lit up, showing faces from the crowd, and finally landing on me. I was surprised, and then a love poem appeared on the screen:
[Summer for thee, grant I may be,
When summer days are flown!
Thy music still, when Whippoorwill,
And Oriole—are done!
For thee to bloom, I'll skip the tomb
And row my blossoms over!
Pray gather me—Anemone—Thy flower—forevermore!]
Right after that, even more fireworks exploded, making the square even more lively.
Lila sighed, "Diana, you're so lucky. You just got divorced this morning, and someone's already making a big love declaration. You should go for it."
She gave me a playful wink.
I made a finger gun, pointed at her, and asked, "Did you know about this all along?"
Lila waved her hand innocently. "What? I don't know anything. But seriously, who could be that romantic?" Her eyes sparkled with curiosity.
"Who else? It's gotta be David," I said, feeling a bit annoyed.
"Diana, you're blushing," Lila teased, leaning in close to my cheek.
"Alright, cut it out," I said, pretending to be mad.
The square was still buzzing with excitement, so I grabbed Lila's hand and made a quick exit. The parking lot was much quieter, a nice change from the chaos.
But I was still feeling the buzz from the square, my head spinning a bit. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a shadow moving behind a car. My heart skipped a beat, and I tightened my grip on Lila's hand. Taking a deep breath, I shouted, "Who's there? Come out from behind the car!"
Footsteps approached, and David stepped out, holding a bouquet of red roses. He walked up to me, bowed slightly, and said, "Diana, congrats on being single again. From today on, I want to officially pursue you."
He held out the bouquet, steady as a rock.
Lila, standing next to me, looked startled. She quickly pulled her hand away from mine and said, "I left something in the hotel. I'll go get it. You two have fun." Before I could say anything, she took off.
"Lila, wait!" I called after her.
She didn't stop, just waved her hand and shouted, "Good luck!" It felt like she was saying it to David.
David noticed my hesitation and slowly circled around me, his eyes never leaving mine. "Have you fallen out of love with flowers? Looks like you've been missing out on romance with Edward. But don't worry, I'll make up for it."
His voice was soft, but it lit a fire in me. My chest heaved, my face flushed, and I snapped, "No need to wait. Start now."
I grabbed the flowers from his hand, marched to the car, and threw them into the back seat. Then I slammed the door and got in.
David quickly opened the passenger door and sat down.
"Who said you could get in my car?" I glared at him.
David shrugged, a mischievous grin on his face. "I set up that romantic fireworks display for you. The least you can do is give me a ride home. Besides, we live together."
"What do you mean we live together?" I frowned.
David smirked, "We're neighbors. I came early this morning to set everything up. My driver's off duty now. If you don't take me home, I'll have to sleep in a flower bed. Can you really leave me homeless?"
I sighed and started the car.
