Chapter 406 Parent-Child Outfit
I thought for a moment before replying to Edward, then said, "We should do a thorough internal audit of our companies to make sure there aren't any moles feeding them information. We also need to tighten up our business processes to minimize vulnerabilities and prevent them from exploiting any weaknesses."
We'd always focused on external threats, never considering that someone inside our companies might be working with Fiona or Anne to sabotage us.
My suggestion seemed to wake everyone up. Edward nodded slightly, "You're right. We've always concentrated on external competitors, neglecting potential internal threats. This is a big issue that needs to be addressed right away."
Everyone agreed.
But conducting such an audit was easier said than done. With so many employees and complex business lines, thoroughly investigating without tipping anyone off seemed almost impossible.
We then dove into a heated discussion about the specifics. Time slipped away in the tense atmosphere, and the conference room buzzed with urgency.
After several hours of brainstorming, we finally drafted a preliminary plan.
Looking at the plan, which represented everyone's hard work, we were determined to protect everything that belonged to us and uncover the truth behind all the conspiracies.
By the time I dragged my exhausted body home, it was already very late.
I pushed open the door, and the warm yellow light inside the house melted away my fatigue.
In the living room, Skylar was curled up in a corner of the sofa, her eyes fixed on the doorway, clutching her sleep toy tightly.
Seeing me return, Skylar's eyes instantly lit up, and she dropped the toy, bouncing over like a joyful little deer.
"Mommy, you're finally home!"
Skylar's soft voice carried a hint of grievance and a lot of joy, her little arms immediately wrapping around my leg.
I bent down to pick her up, kissed her rosy cheek, and asked softly, "Sweetie, why aren't you asleep yet?"
Melissa picked up the toy from the floor and quickly explained, "Diana, Skylar refused to sleep, saying she wanted to wait for you to come home and pick out matching outfits together."
I suddenly remembered that tomorrow was Skylar's kindergarten parent-child sports day, and I was supposed to accompany her to the event.
Seeing Skylar's sad expression, my heart warmed, and I felt a bit guilty. I squatted down and asked, "So, has Skylar picked out an outfit yet?"
Skylar rubbed her eyes and yawned, but still tried to stay awake, saying, "Mommy, I want to pick the prettiest matching outfit with you, so I can look beautiful at the event tomorrow."
Seeing her serious and expectant expression, my fatigue instantly vanished.
I carried Skylar to the dressing room, pulling out clothes and comparing them against myself, muttering, "This one looks nice, this one too..."
After some deliberation, Skylar and I finally settled on a cozy light blue matching outfit.
Skylar was already exhausted, looking completely drained. Melissa and I helped her change into her pajamas and put her to bed.
Watching her sweet sleeping face, I began to look forward to tomorrow's sports day, our first parent-child event together.
The next day, the sun bathed the kindergarten playground in light. I walked in with Skylar, who was captivated by the cheerful atmosphere, constantly greeting her little friends.
"Diana, Skylar."
A familiar voice called from behind. I turned around to see Alaric in a fresh blue sports outfit.
The fitted outfit highlighted his tall figure, his bangs slightly damp with sweat, exuding a sunny and energetic vibe. He smiled warmly, handing Skylar a cute cartoon balloon and gently patting her head.
My heart raced uncontrollably as I noticed Alaric's outfit, which was strikingly similar to the matching outfits Skylar and I had chosen. The colors were close, and the style had an inexplicable harmony.
Suddenly, the children's laughter and parents' chatter seemed to fade away, leaving only Alaric and the outfit that made me feel incredibly awkward.
Perhaps wanting to impress Skylar with his athletic prowess, he crouched down to her level, enthusiastically saying, "Skylar, I was a sports champion when I was a kid! Every time there was a school sports day, I would win first place. When I ran, I was like the wind, leaving all the other kids far behind. It was so cool! Today, I'll join you in the sports day, and we'll win lots of first places, okay?"
Skylar's eyes widened with curiosity and admiration, "Wow, Mr. Kingsley, you're amazing!"
Then, Alaric stood up and looked at me with a hint of expectation, softly saying, "Diana, let me join Skylar in the sports day. I want her to know that I'll always be good to her."
Before I could respond, a familiar figure suddenly entered my view.
Edward was still dressed in a dark business suit, with polished shoes and neatly combed hair.
However, in the lively and vibrant setting of the kindergarten sports day, his attire seemed completely out of place.
The other parents wore casual, colorful sports outfits, and the children were dressed in playful clothes, bouncing around. Edward looked like a serious adult who had wandered into a fairy tale world, standing out awkwardly in the colorful scene.
For a moment, everyone's attention was drawn to him. Several passing parents paused when they saw Edward, then began pointing and whispering.
Though the murmurs were quiet, they made Edward visibly uncomfortable.
Edward clearly hadn't anticipated this situation.
His eyes showed a fleeting hint of panic.
After a moment's hesitation, he gathered his courage and said to me, "Diana, I really want to join Skylar as her dad in this sports day. Please give me a chance."
My mind went blank, my gaze shifting between Alaric and Edward, unable to find a place to settle between these two equally expectant men.
