Chapter 385 Conspiracy
David and I were in the office, stressing out about the situation, when the door suddenly flew open. Lila barged in, looking all flustered, clutching a small voice recorder.
"Diana, David, I've found something huge!" Lila panted.
She hurried over and placed the recorder on the table. "I intercepted a call between Anne and Nicholas. You won't believe what they're saying."
David and I exchanged a look, full of anticipation. He grabbed the recorder and hit play. A slightly noisy but clear conversation started.
"Nicholas, I've been busting my ass for you for ages. The mall project is moving along, but I think we can go bigger. Can you give me more resources to make a real name for myself?" Anne's greedy voice came through first.
Nicholas was quiet for a moment before he sighed and spoke slowly, "Business is like a battlefield, full of uncertainties. You know Lucas doesn't care about business. The empire I've built needs someone dedicated to keep it going."
Nicholas paused, lowering his voice. "The Wilson family has been making big moves. With Fiona's support, Edward is gaining traction. Do you realize what Edward's success could mean for us?"
After a brief silence, Nicholas's sly voice continued, "If you can ease my worries right now, once everything settles, your position in this business will be solid."
"Nicholas, don't worry. I won't let you down. I'll make sure they see my strength," Anne promised confidently.
After listening to the recording, I felt a wave of despair. I turned to Lila. Nicholas was planning to ditch Lucas and put everything on Anne.
But Lila seemed unfazed, while David's face turned dark. He clenched his fists, veins popping on his forehead. "Anne is too much! She already got a huge piece of land from the Wilson family, and now she's plotting against us."
I tried to calm David down. "Now's not the time for anger. We need to think clearly and come up with a plan. This recording is crucial evidence for our counterattack, but we need to refine our strategy."
I looked at Lila and asked, "Does Lucas know Nicholas is backing Anne like this?"
Lila bit her lip, hesitating. "Lucas has always known. He's never been interested in the family business battles. He just wants to be a wandering artist, traveling the world with his easel, capturing life's beauty with his brush."
David's anger eased a bit, replaced by surprise. "I see. But why does Nicholas still force him to take over the family business?""Nicholas has spent his whole life in the business world and naturally wants Lucas to take over and grow the family empire. To him, Lucas's dream of being an artist is just a silly fantasy," Lila explained with a sigh.
I thought for a moment before asking, "And what about Lucas? Is he just going to let Anne take over everything?"
"He doesn't care about that stuff. He's more interested in getting away from it all," Lila said.
I suddenly felt a bit sorry for Lila. She was always so strong, yet her partner was so indifferent to the family's power struggles. "And you? Don't you care?" I asked.
Lila shook her head. "Like Lucas, I don't care about Nicholas's assets and power. But now, this might be a turning point for Lucas."
I had a hunch about her thoughts. "Exactly. Since Lucas isn't interested, and Anne is causing trouble, we can use this chance to free him from this burden and let him chase his dreams," I said.
Lila looked at us firmly. "Alaric has always been sharp in business, and he's close to Lucas. We're planning to transfer the tech project Lucas is handling to Alaric."
David was against the idea. "Isn't that too risky? What if it angers Nicholas?"
Lila shook her head calmly. "It's okay. Lucas won't mind."
"And you? Are you going to wander with Lucas?" I asked, concerned.
"Of course not. I'll stay here with you and Stellar Legal Advisors, continuing my work as a lawyer," Lila said with a bright smile.
I nodded, agreeing with Lila's proposal. "This might be a win-win solution. It helps Lucas achieve his dream and disrupts Anne and Nicholas's plans."
Lila nodded and added, "Also, I've noticed Anne's been very active lately, likely preparing for her next move. We need to help the Wilson Group stabilize quickly and not give the villains any more opportunities."
David paced back and forth, his shoes making a tense, urgent sound against the floor. He suddenly stopped and looked at us. "The priority is to stabilize morale. If people panic, the situation will spiral out of control."
I nodded in agreement. "This recording is a powerful weapon."
I picked up the recorder and shook it. "We need to find the right moment to expose Anne and Nicholas's conspiracy."
"I'm thinking of organizing a press conference. We'll clarify the Wilson Group's current situation, dispel false rumors, and publicly reveal Anne and Nicholas's dirty deeds," David said through gritted teeth.
"Nicholas and Anne won't be easily defeated by this recording. The press conference is a good idea, but we need to choose the right timing. I have a feeling they have backup plans. We need to be cautious," I reminded David.
"Exactly, David. Anne is easy to deal with, but Nicholas is not. We need to be careful. If we anger him, it could cause even bigger problems," Lila warned, having learned more about Nicholas since marrying Lucas.
