Chapter 238 Acquiring Shares

When I first sold off my shares in the Cooper Group, it left everyone scratching their heads. Now, buying them all back had only added to their confusion. People tended to make snap decisions when they were unsure, which made reclaiming my shares a breeze. But to me, these were just minor details.

I looked at the contract on the table with satisfaction and asked Theo, "How much have we gotten back so far?"

Theo hesitated a bit. "We've managed to buy back most of the scattered shares. But there's a snag. After you sold your shares, Nicholas bought some from each shareholder at a price above market value. Now, he's the largest individual shareholder in the Cooper Group."

I was taken aback. "Wait, are you saying my godfather bought my shares?"

Theo nodded. "Yeah, I've talked to his assistant a few times. They said Nicholas won't sell the shares. But I haven't been able to meet Nicholas in person."

I pondered over the documents in my hand. "Did you tell them it was me who wanted to buy back the shares?"

I thought, Nicholas was my godfather after all. Maybe he'd make an exception for me.

Theo continued, "Of course. But they said Nicholas wants you to meet him in person if you want the shares back."

It was typical of Nicholas.

I closed the file and smiled at Theo. "I should visit my godfather anyway. Make the arrangements."

Theo nodded and left my office.

The meeting with Nicholas was set at his estate. Nicholas never married and had no children, which was why he wanted me to be his goddaughter. As I looked at the vast estate, I couldn't help but feel a bit sorry for this solitary old man. Despite his dominance in the business world, controlling nearly half of Wind City's assets, he was still destined to face a lonely end.

I arrived at the estate alone as agreed. Just as I sat down, Nicholas emerged from a room, supported by a young man.

"Diana, you're here."

I quickly stood up to greet him, noticing that the young man bore a striking resemblance to Nicholas.

Nicholas's expression turned slightly awkward, but the young man greeted me calmly. "Ms. Cooper, I've heard a lot about you."

Who was he? How did he know me? I racked my brain but couldn't recall ever meeting him.

"Dad, please sit here," the young man said, helping Nicholas to the sofa.

I was stunned and instinctively looked at Nicholas.

Nicholas sighed. "I can't hide it any longer. This is my son, Lucas Jackson. His mother passed away when he was very young."

Lucas didn't seem to mind his background and smiled at me. "Ms. Cooper, I know you're here for the shares. My dad said he would give them to me."

Lucas's easy smile made it hard to gauge his intentions. I turned to Nicholas and said sincerely, "Godfather, the Cooper Group means a lot to me. I had no choice but to sell my shares back then. Now, I want them back. Please, help me out."

After a brief pause, I added, "Name your price."

Lucas chimed in, "Dad, I'm not interested in business. I just want to be a wandering artist. Why not return the shares to Ms. Cooper and fulfill her wish?"

I was taken aback, not understanding why Lucas would help me.

Nicholas was silent for a moment, his gaze shifting between Lucas and me. Finally, he spoke slowly, "Alright. You're not cut out for business anyway. Besides, if your identity is revealed, it could attract trouble."

Their conversation left me repeatedly shocked. Nicholas turned to me and said, "Diana, I've always admired your determination. Since Lucas suggested it, the shares are yours."

I was overjoyed and thanked him profusely.

Nicholas waved it off. "Next week, I'm attending a business conference. Come with me and meet some industry elites."

I nodded earnestly, filled with anticipation for the future, and left the estate.

A week flew by, and I accompanied Nicholas to the conference, which was a gathering of business elites. Nicholas led me into the meeting room, exchanging pleasantries with old friends. I followed closely, responding politely. As we talked, I caught a glimpse of a familiar figure striding into the room.

My heart skipped a beat. It was Edward.

Despite his youth, Edward exuded a powerful presence, as if he could command the entire room. He scanned the crowd, his gaze first landing on Ronnie Griffin, the president of the Griffin Group, before noticing a young woman sitting nearby.

Following Edward's gaze, I was stunned. It was Fiona, David's fiancée. What was she doing here?

Fiona was young and beautiful, her eyes clear and curious. She glanced at Edward, her cheeks flushing instantly. She seemed to sense my gaze and turned to meet my eyes. A flicker of panic crossed her face, as she clearly didn't expect to see me here. After a brief moment, she quickly looked away.

Edward's gaze, however, didn't linger on Fiona. When he saw me, he paused, then a faint smile played on his lips as he walked over, his eyes gleaming with amusement.

"Didn't expect to see you here, Diana. Looks like you're doing well without my help. Got all the Cooper Group shares back, huh?"

I frowned slightly, refusing to back down. "Edward, Nicholas is my godfather. I got back what's mine through my own efforts. No need for your sarcasm."

Nicholas sensed the tension and gently patted my shoulder, whispering, "Diana, don't be impulsive."

I took a deep breath, suppressing my anger.

Edward, seemingly unfazed, turned his attention to Fiona, a hint of interest in his eyes.

What was he thinking?

Before I could figure it out, the meeting began, and everyone took their seats.
