Chapter 259 The Person Under the Cloak
So, Theo's words turned out to be spot on.
As soon as I stepped out of the elevator, my foot slipped, and I went flying backward, totally out of control.
In a panic, I grabbed the railing nearby, barely managing to steady myself.
Still shaken, I looked down and saw this glaring puddle of liquid on the floor, reflecting the light like crazy.
It didn't look like water, so I didn't dare to move recklessly. Carefully, I took a tissue from my handbag, dabbed it in the liquid, and brought it to my nose. My brow furrowed instantly—it was oil. No wonder I almost slipped; an oil-slicked floor as smooth as glass was a disaster waiting to happen.
I couldn't help but mutter to myself, "The building management is really irresponsible. There's so much oil in the hallway, but they haven't even noticed or cleaned it up. Only Melissa, an elderly lady next door, and I live on this floor. If she stepped on it, she would definitely fall and get hurt like I almost did."
Just then, Melissa heard the noise and opened the door. She looked at me with concern and smiled, saying, "Diana, you're back! Come in, I made some soup for you."
I waved my hand slightly and responded calmly, "Melissa, I've already eaten. Could you please help clean up this oil on the floor?"
Melissa looked where I was pointing, her eyes full of confusion, and muttered softly, "How did this happen? It was clean when I came back from grocery shopping this afternoon."
My instincts were always sharp, and this strange situation made me cautious.
I immediately looked at Melissa, my expression serious and slightly cautious, and asked, "Melissa, what time did you come back this afternoon?"
Melissa thought for a moment and said, "I got back a bit later today, around early evening."
Hearing this, I suddenly remembered the security camera at the entrance and quickly checked the footage on my phone.
Sure enough, shortly after Melissa entered, a mysterious woman appeared on the screen.
She was wearing a black cloak and a hat, covering herself completely. This woman paced back and forth in front of my door, occasionally looking around nervously.
Finally, she seemed to make up her mind, took a bottle from her bag, and without hesitation, poured the liquid all over my doorstep.
As I watched the liquid spread across the floor, a wave of anger surged within me.
I was almost certain this person was targeting me.
But I had always been careful with my life, avoiding conflicts as much as possible. Why did these inexplicable dangers keep coming my way?
Suppressing my anger, I took screenshots of the footage and sent them to the building management. Then I sent a voice message: "What's going on with your security? You let such a dangerous person roam freely in the building, nearly causing me serious injury. Please investigate this safety incident thoroughly!"
Yosef, the property manager, quickly replied, repeatedly assuring me that they would immediately increase patrols and promising that nothing like this would happen again.
But I knew that mere apologies and promises wouldn't truly solve the problem. At this moment, besides urging them, I couldn't think of a better solution.
Feeling utterly exhausted, I returned to my room, intending to rest early. But Nicholas and Anne's conversation kept replaying in my head, refusing to fade away.
The little one in my belly seemed to sense my emotional turmoil and started moving restlessly. I remembered the doctor’s advice to take it easy and realized I really needed a good night's sleep.
I closed my eyes, trying to calm myself and stop thinking about all the troubles. But thoughts kept flashing through my mind uncontrollably. It took forever before I finally fell asleep.
The next morning, I woke up early. Reflecting on yesterday's party, I felt it was pretty productive. I had made connections with several major companies in Wind City, and the two companies whose deals Anne had sabotaged decided to sign contracts with the Cooper Group.
These deals were crucial for the Cooper Group, and I had to manage them well to solidify our position in the economic sector.
Thinking about drafting the contracts, I hurried to the underground garage, but my good mood vanished instantly upon seeing a bunch of thumbtacks scattered around my car's tires. Luckily, I had a habit of checking my car before driving, or these tacks would have definitely punctured the tires.
Looking around, the other cars were untouched. Clearly, someone was targeting me. But who could it be? The hidden enemy left me clueless. Was it because I stood out too much at last night's party, provoking someone's jealousy?
Suppressing my anger, I quickly took photos of the scene and sent them to Yosef, then called him, my tone icy. "Look at the photos. If my car's tires had blown out because of these tacks, your management, especially you, would be held responsible! The oil at my doorstep might be an accident, but thumbtacks by my tires are a serious safety issue! Investigate this immediately and give me an explanation!"
Yosef was flustered on the phone, repeatedly apologizing and promising an immediate investigation. After hanging up, I realized that the battle with my hidden enemy had just begun.
Within half a day, Yosef delivered shocking news: The person who spilled oil at my doorstep and scattered thumbtacks around my tires was the same one. Clearly, after committing the first act, this person didn't stop but meticulously moved to the garage to set up a new trap for my car. Unfortunately, she was so well-disguised that no one could see her face.
Upon learning this, I immediately devised a plan and called Theo over.
I said, "Theo, I won't be driving myself for a while. You're busy with work every day, and it's inconvenient for you to pick me up and drop me off. Please hire a trustworthy driver for me."
Theo looked concerned and quickly asked, "Did something happen? Why do you suddenly need a driver?"
I kept my expression neutral, waving my hand as I replied, "Nothing special, just that since I've been pregnant, I get tired more easily, and driving is becoming too much for me."
Theo, though still doubtful, didn't press further and nodded in agreement.
Seeing this, I then added, "Also, keep an eye on any companies that have shown unusual interest in us lately, especially our competitors. Report any suspicious activity to me right away."
Theo, a veteran in the business world, instantly understood the deeper meaning behind my words and responded promptly, "Understood. I'll keep a close eye on things."
