Chapter 196 Gentleness and Restraint

David frowned a bit and said, "Diana, you've been drinking. You're not thinking of driving yourself home, are you?"

Hearing this, I regretted that I had been too happy today and completely forgot to book a designated driver. I slowly stopped starting the car and tilted my head towards David. "Yeah, I've had a few, but you haven't, right? So, could you drive me home?" With that, I stepped out of the car and made a gesture of invitation to David.

David shook his head lightly and blew a crisp, loud whistle. Moments later, his driver came running over.

David then flashed a mischievous smile and said, "My driver happened to come to watch the fireworks, so let him drive you home."

At that moment, I had no other option but to sigh helplessly and accept his suggestion.

The driver started the car, and David and I sat in the back seat. David carefully placed the bouquet of flowers between us, as if it were a precious treasure. I couldn't help but glance at the flowers from time to time, feeling an indescribable unease.

As the car slowly drove into the neighborhood, I breathed a sigh of relief and my shoulders relaxed. David and I got out of the car one after the other and walked into the building. When I opened the door and was about to say goodbye to David, he suddenly extended his arm quickly, blocking my way.

With a vigilant look in my eyes, I loudly questioned, "David, what are you doing?"

David's mischievous smile grew more pronounced as he said, "Aren't you going to invite me in for a visit?"

I quickly raised my wrist, glanced at the time, and said seriously, "It's already very late. Let's do it another day."

But David ignored my refusal. He pushed his shoulder forward, squeezed past me, and muttered, "I don't want another day. I want today."

David swaggered into my living room and plopped down on the sofa.

"You're really being a jerk," I couldn't help but complain. Despite my dissatisfaction, I still poured David a glass of water. He took the glass without a word, tilted his head slightly, and slowly sipped the water.

I sat on the small sofa next to him, feeling the effects of the alcohol and the onset of drowsiness. I yawned and my eyelids grew heavy. Suddenly, I felt my body lifted, as if being carried towards the bedroom.

My previously relaxed nerves instantly tensed. I swung my fists, pounding on the person's back, and shouted, "Edward, let me go! We're divorced, you can't do this to me!" I kicked my legs, trying to break free from the grip.

At that moment, a gentle yet urgent voice reached my ears. "Diana, it's me; don't be afraid!"

However, my struggle caused us to lose balance, and we both fell heavily onto the bed.

In a daze, I slowly opened my eyes, and my vision gradually cleared. David's handsome face appeared unexpectedly in my sight. He was so close that I could almost feel his breath. My heart tightened, and my mind went blank. His eyes were filled with intense emotion, making me feel both flustered and expectant.

With my eyes locked on him, David's expression shifted. He seemed to be wrestling with some internal decision. Then, as if he had finally made up his mind, he leaned in slowly, his face inching closer to mine with a cautious tenderness, like he was afraid of scaring me off. As the gap between us closed, I could feel his warm breath on my cheek. His lips brushed mine softly, like a feather. Instinctively, I closed my eyes, my body tensing up.

David's kiss was gentle. I could feel his tenderness and restraint, so different from Edward's forceful and hurried kisses. One of his hands slowly lifted, his fingers threading through my hair like he was touching something precious. Every movement was filled with care and affection, his fingertips gently massaging my scalp, sending a warm tingle through me. His other hand moved slowly along the curve of my body, finally resting on my waist.

It was as though a voice in my heart whispered, "Just give in this time, feel his profound love." Under his gentle assault, my previously muddled consciousness gradually cleared, and a sense of panic and shyness welled up in my heart. I instinctively raised my hands, pressing my palms against his firm chest and gently pushing.

However, the light push was enough to bring David back to his senses. He quickly pulled away, his body recoiling as if burned, creating a distance between us. In his eyes, I glimpsed panic, regret, and an unmistakable yearning.

David's body trembled slightly, his eyes filled with a hint of panic as he stammered, "I'm sorry, Diana. I was too hasty." The once arrogant and confident David now stood before me like a child who had made a mistake, full of remorse and nervousness.

Taking advantage of his moment of rising, I also sat up. For a moment, the entire bedroom was enveloped in an awkward atmosphere.

David raised his hand to scratch his head, trying to calm himself down, and continued to stammer, "I really didn't mean to do anything to you; it's just that I couldn't help myself just now. I'm sorry."

With that, he turned and hurried out of the room.

I watched David's hurried departure and couldn't help but sigh softly. Compared to the proud and confident demeanor he had when he first entered, he now seemed to be fleeing in defeat. At the same time, I felt a twinge of emotion.

Despite his deep love for me over the years and our close proximity just now, where I could even feel the subtle changes in his body due to excitement, he remained steadfast in his boundaries, refraining from any behavior that would have crossed the line. For this alone, he was far better than Edward.
