Chapter 47 Ban

"What about the others?" I asked quietly, feeling a wave of guilt wash over me.

"They all left. Some got poached by other firms, and some just switched careers altogether. Even Lila left. Heard she's going back to school, but who knows how that's going." Nolan was shoving scattered documents into a big bag.

A pang of pain hit me. David had brought Nolan in to start Stellar Legal Advisors for me, but over the years, it was Nolan and his team who built its reputation. Now, because of me, they were all out of jobs, and it hurt.

"David's such a jerk, making you all lose your income." I glanced around; the movers had already cleared out most of the stuff and were waiting to take the chair where Nolan had placed the documents.

"You can't put all the blame on Mr. Wilson. Stellar Legal Advisors did go bankrupt. But the compensation he provided is enough for us to live comfortably for the rest of our lives."

Hearing Nolan say that, I felt a bit relieved. Most of the team were regular folks from modest backgrounds. If David could compensate them well, it was something.

"Then why are you still here?" I asked.

Nolan gave a bitter smile. "Even though Mr. Wilson invested in the firm, I've been running it all these years. Even though it's closing down now, I still want to wrap things up properly."

Nolan was right, but thinking about how I was facing unemployment just as I started working, I couldn't help but feel sad. I wanted to uphold justice, but in the end, I couldn't even protect my closest friends. Tears welled up in my eyes.

Nolan shook his head. "There are some things in this world you just can't fight, Diana. Like now, the firm is gone, and everyone's lives are disrupted, but we still have to move forward, don't we?"

"So what are you planning to do next?" I asked Nolan.

Nolan shook his head. "What else can I do? I'll finish tidying up here and let everything else take its course. This address, Mr. Wilson asked me to give it to you. He said you must go there tomorrow night." Nolan said.

Nolan and I silently packed up the remaining documents. The firm, like the setting sun outside the window, was gradually sinking into silence. But I knew this might also be the beginning of a new journey for me.

In the evening, the club was lit with flickering lights, filled with a decadent atmosphere. I walked into the club wearing a casual and comfortable dress, not expecting to see a stunning woman standing next to David.

As soon as we met, a barely noticeable disdain appeared on her delicate face. She glanced at me and then said sweetly to David, "David, is this the friend you mentioned?"

She deliberately emphasized the word "friend," her eyes full of provocation.

Before I could speak, she continued, "Miss, did you dress like this to the club to attract attention, or are you too poor to afford a nice dress?" Her words were like thorns.

A wave of disgust surged in my heart, and I responded with a cold smile, "I'm here to see a friend. What I wear is my business, not yours."

Zara Jenkins frowned slightly, seemingly not expecting me to respond so firmly.

A plump woman next to her rushed forward and cursed, "How dare you speak to Zara like that? She's Mr. Wilson's favored young actress and his girlfriend!"

She was the lead actress from the recently popular drama. I looked her up and down, thinking that young actresses indeed looked decent, but she was even skinnier than on screen.

But I didn't back down and teased, "I see, so Mr. Wilson likes this type." I puffed out my chest slightly, adding to the sarcasm.

Zara didn't catch my sarcasm and smiled slightly. "Look at you, so plain-looking and poorly dressed. Do you also want to make it in this circle?" She said, linking arms with David and pressing her body close to his.

By now, some people around us had been drawn to our conversation. I observed David's expression; he looked amused but showed no sign of intimacy with Zara. I realized Zara was merely a toy, destined to be discarded eventually.

I took a deep breath and decided not to hold back. "Zara, don't think you're so special just because you're an actress. Does David even give you a second glance?"

Zara seemed to be hit where it hurt; a flash of anger crossed her eyes. "You, don't be so arrogant. I'll have David blacklist you!"

As we were at a standoff, David watched coldly from the side, seemingly waiting to see a good show.
