Chapter 399 Light at the End of the Tunnel
"I'm at Stellar Legal Advisors, but I feel like there are some shady people hanging around outside. I can't get out!" Lila's voice was shaking with fear.
I hung up, my heart pounding with worry.
I turned to Harvey, my eyes wide with urgency. "Harvey, my friend Lila's in trouble. I gotta go help her."
Harvey saw the panic in my eyes and asked, "Diana, this sounds serious. Do you need backup? I know this area pretty well and could help."
I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself, and shook my head. "Thanks, Harvey, but my friends and I can handle it. It's too risky to drag you into this."
Harvey looked at me, understanding in his eyes, and nodded. "Alright, Diana. But if things get hairy, don't hesitate to call. I'll be there."
When I got to Stellar Legal Advisors, David and Edward were already in the car, scoping out the place.
"There's definitely some sketchy folks around, trying to blend in," David said quietly, pointing to a guy loitering by the flowerbeds.
We slipped past them and got inside.
We found Lila huddled in a corner of the office.
She ran over to us like we were her lifeline. "Diana, thank God you're here!"
I hugged her, trying to calm her down. "It's okay, we're here now."
I handed her the documents Anne had given me. "These are from Anne. They prove Nicholas and Fiona are working together. They might help."
David, looking confused, asked, "Diana, how'd you get these from Anne? She was tight with Nicholas and Fiona. What changed?"
I sighed and gave them a quick rundown of what happened at the coffee shop.
Lila, still shaking, flipped through the documents, a spark of hope in her eyes. "These are huge, Diana. But Nicholas won't let this slide. He'll come after us."
"Let's not worry about that right now. We need to figure out how to get out of here first," Edward reminded us.
Just then, my phone rang again, an unknown number on the screen. I hesitated but answered it.
"Diana, it's Jeffrey."
Jeffrey's deep voice came through the phone.
Before I could say anything, he continued, "I know Anne came to see you. Nicholas found out she betrayed him and he's hunting her down."
I looked at my friends, their faces serious, having heard the call. David frowned, "This is bad. We're still in danger too."
Edward thought for a moment, "We need a plan to dodge those guys outside and get out safely. Is there another way out of this building?"
"I know a way through the basement," David suddenly said.
He led us through a maze of hallways to a hidden basement entrance. "This passage is pretty much a secret and comes out on the other side of the street. No one should spot us."
David guided us into the passage. It was dark, damp, and smelled musty. We moved carefully, dodging the clutter scattered around.
Just as we emerged from the basement onto a narrow path, a figure blocked our way.
"Trying to escape? Not so fast!"
The raspy voice belonged to Nicholas. He had a group of thugs with him, surrounding us.
Edward pulled me behind him, and David shielded Lila and me.
Nicholas sneered, "You think those documents can threaten me? How naive! No one's leaving here today."
I gripped the folder tightly, staring at Nicholas without flinching. "Godfather, this is just business. Why make such a big scene?"
Nicholas's face darkened. "You still remember I'm your godfather? Is this how you repay me?"
He then turned to Lila, "Lucas just left, and you're already with the enemy? You ungrateful woman, I should never have saved you."
Lila shuddered at his words, tears welling up. "Stop pretending. You saved me for your own gain. Now you want to use me as a pawn."
Though Lila's voice was soft, Nicholas heard her and snorted, "Ungrateful!"
He waved his hand, and the thugs began to close in on us, ready to attack.
I cursed under my breath, realizing we were trapped. Behind us was the basement, and Nicholas's men blocked the way forward. The situation was dire.
Edward whispered to us, "When the chance comes, David and I will charge forward. You two run to a crowded place and find the police."
"Run? No one's leaving today!" Nicholas snarled.
A thug suddenly lunged at David, swinging a club. David dodged easily and kicked the thug's knee, causing him to stumble and fall.
Edward also sprang into action, grappling with several thugs.
Lila and I dodged, worried about Edward and David's safety.
I quickly reached into my pocket and pressed the emergency signal on my phone, hoping the police would arrive soon.
The situation remained critical. Despite Edward and David's fighting skills, they were outnumbered and starting to struggle.
Suddenly, an unmarked car sped towards us, forcing Nicholas and his men to scatter in panic.
The car stopped in front of us, and the window rolled down. It was Alaric.
"Get in, quick!" he shouted urgently.
We didn't hesitate and jumped into the car. Alaric floored the gas, and the car shot forward, leaving Nicholas and his men behind.
"Alaric, thank you so much! How did you know we were here?" I asked, breathless.
