Chapter 46 Things Change, People Change

"Mr. Howard, I'm really sorry." Joshua grabbed his uniform and hat, bowing to Edward.

I thought Edward would blow up, but to my surprise, he just let Joshua leave without a word.

"Edward, Joshua didn't mean it," I tried to explain, but then I remembered Joshua had just taken Anne away. My defense would probably just piss Edward off more.

Outside, Anne was crying, "Edward, save me!" Her voice faded away. Edward finally walked up to me, and I met his gaze.

"Did you tell Joshua to grab Anne?" Edward grabbed my collar, his voice icy.

I shook my head. "I was with you all morning after I left the police station."

I thought back to my last chat with Nolan. He mentioned one of Anne's kidnappers was her classmate, a kid from a poor family but close to Anne. I wasn't sure about the details and didn't want to guess in front of Edward.

"Joshua had a warrant," I continued, "which means there must be some new development in the case. If she's innocent, they'll let her go. We should find out what's going on."

Honestly, when the cops took Anne, I had a hunch she was behind it.

But I couldn't figure out if she wanted to get rid of me or get Edward's attention. Either way, why would she have someone kidnap her?

Edward said firmly, "Get out of my sight. We're done."

I shouted, "Edward, am I just your punching bag? You call me when you want and kick me out when you don't?"

Edward looked hurt by my words. He said quietly, "Now you don't want to leave?" Then he shouted, "Fine, we won't get divorced!"

Tears filled my eyes, blurring my vision. I took a deep breath, trying to calm down, but my mind was a mess with images of their fight and Joshua's look when he saw me.

I stared blankly ahead, my mind full of Edward and Joshua fighting. Each step felt like it was on my shattered heart. I suddenly stopped, squatted down, and hugged my shoulders, trying to find some strength.

After leaving the basement, I was still panicking. I didn't know where to go; the only person I could think of was Lila. Thinking she might still be working late, I hurried to Stellar Legal Advisors.

Stellar Legal Advisors, usually brightly lit, was now dark.

I pushed the door open, and a cold silence greeted me. Two workers were carrying a desk out.

What the heck was going on? I stepped back to check the sign. Yep, it was Stellar Legal Advisors. Walking back in, the usual hustle and bustle was gone. The big desks and piles of files were missing, leaving just a mess and some scattered papers.

In the corner, a familiar figure was squatting and organizing files. He looked especially lonely in the empty room.

"Nolan, what happened? Where did Lila and the others go?" I asked urgently.

Nolan looked up, and I saw the exhaustion on his face. "Diana." His eyes were full of fatigue and helplessness.

He sighed and said, "I'm good at handling cases and lawsuits, but I'm not good at business. Stellar Legal Advisors was a project funded by Mr. Wilson. Now that its mission is complete, Mr. Wilson has pulled his investment."

I stood there, stunned, thinking about everything that had happened recently. Just a few days ago, we were all in the conference room, discussing my case. Now everything had changed, leaving behind a hollowness that mirrored the empty office.
