Chapter 154 The One Who Refused to Divorce is Edward

I shook my head, feeling the pain, and told her about Edward's attitude—leaving out the part about our recent hookup.

She gently patted my back and said softly, "Calm down. You're about to be a mom; don't let these little things mess with your health."

Taking a deep breath, I tried to calm myself. Lila was right. The most important thing right now was to take care of the baby growing inside me. It would be best to have the baby without Edward knowing, but as my belly grew, it would be hard to hide. The only thing I could do was divorce Edward as soon as possible and find a place where no one knew me to have the baby.

With that in mind, I decided to file for divorce right away. Even though I had left Stellar Legal Advisors, Lila had kept my workstation and office supplies for me. I could use this chance to send the divorce email to Edward.

I opened my computer, my fingers flying over the keyboard as I quickly drafted the divorce papers. My fingers trembled over the send button, but I gritted my teeth and clicked it. It felt like time had frozen; the divorce papers, carrying all my determination and reluctance, were now on their way to Edward's inbox.

When the success notification popped up, my heart started racing like crazy. I paced back and forth in the room, anxiety and panic filling each step.

Images of Edward's angry face and our sweet moments together flashed through my mind, intertwining and tangling my thoughts. I tried to take deep breaths to calm myself, but my breathing stayed erratic. I had no idea how he would respond to the email; the uncertainty felt like an invisible hand squeezing my heart.

With no reply, it felt like the email had vanished into thin air, leaving my heart in perpetual darkness. I both hoped Edward would agree to the divorce without a fuss and feared a stormy refusal.

What I didn't know was that Edward never expected me to actually file for divorce. It was like the word "divorce" had suddenly become real between us. He probably always thought that no matter how complicated things got, I was just talking and wouldn't really go through with it. At that moment, an unprecedented sense of panic, like vines growing in the dark, began to spread in his heart, quickly wrapping around every nerve.

Considering that my divorce from Edward was now an undeniable reality, I felt a mix of emotions but decided to return to the Howard Villa. I needed to pack up all my personal belongings and finally say goodbye to this complicated marriage.

I knew that since I moved out, Anne had taken it upon herself to get rid of many of my things. Those designer bags, fashionable clothes, and luxurious cosmetics and jewelry that I once cherished had either been claimed by Anne or discarded.

But I didn't care about those material possessions; what I truly cared about was a small gift from Mia. It might be an ordinary item, and compared to those priceless luxury goods, it seemed so plain and even a bit shabby. Yet, it held irreplaceable significance for me.

When I got back to the Howard Villa, I was hit with a scene I didn't expect. Anne and her friends were throwing a wild party. The once pristine living room was now a wreck, reeking of smoke and booze.

A bunch of barely dressed young men and women were lounging around, some sprawled out in indecent positions. Many had cigarettes in hand, and the swirling smoke made the place look like a chaotic underground club.

They were all gathered around Anne, who looked like she was running the show. My eyes quickly zeroed in on the necklace around Anne's neck—the one Edward had given me when he proposed again recently. It was custom-made, every detail reflecting his love for me at the time. But now, it looked totally out of place on Anne.

As soon as she saw me, Anne stood up. Surprise flashed in her eyes, quickly replaced by a defiant look. She grabbed a wine bottle from the table and slammed it on the marble coffee table, making a loud noise that cut through the chaos. The rowdy crowd quieted down, with all eyes turning to me.

Anne cleared her throat and said loudly, with a mocking tone, "Everyone, this is Diana, Edward's wife, whom I've mentioned so often."

She put extra emphasis on "wife," her voice dripping with sarcasm. The crowd burst into laughter, and a few guys with colorful hair whistled at me. Looking at this group of frivolous young people, I felt a wave of disgust.

I frowned and said, "I'm divorcing Edward, so you don't need to introduce me as his wife anymore."

Anne's lips curled into a mocking smile, her eyes full of disdain. "Diana, stop pretending! Everyone knows you’re just all talk. If you really had the guts to leave the Howard family, you would have filed the divorce papers long ago."

I smiled coldly. "I have filed the divorce papers. Let's get one thing straight: it's Edward who's been refusing the divorce, not me." My words were sharp, carrying an undeniable authority that seemed to chill the air around us.

Anne clearly didn't see that coming. Her eyes widened, and her lips trembled slightly, leaving her speechless for a moment. Her once arrogant demeanor deflated. Those around her, seeing her like this, wisely fell silent, though their eyes showed a hint of schadenfreude.

I knew these people weren't really afraid of Anne; they were just waiting for a chance to laugh at her!

After regaining her composure, Anne tried to save face. She forced a calm tone and said sarcastically, "Since you're getting a divorce, this is no longer your home. Why are you back?"

I nodded slightly and calmly responded, "I'm here to take back my personal belongings."

Anne, thinking she had me, raised her voice. "You've been spending Edward's money since you got married. What right do you have to talk about personal belongings?"

A flicker of anger flashed in my eyes as I stepped forward, radiating a menacing vibe.

"Don't forget," I said, "the Cooper family is no joke. Even if I leave the Howards, I'll still have a great life. Unlike you, who's just a leech clinging to them. Without their protection, you'd be nothing. And that necklace you're wearing was given to me by Edward when he proposed. It symbolizes my bond with the Howards. How dare you wear it and talk trash here? It's ridiculous. Do you think you can get away with anything in front of me?" My gaze, sharp as a blade, cut through Anne, leaving her nowhere to hide.
