Chapter 121 What Happens After a Month?

Luna was lost in memories of her dad's cooking when Charles spoke up. She looked at him, her eyes still a bit red. She blinked, but maintained a calm and composed expression.

"That's a problem for later. Let's take it one step at a time. Got any good ideas?"

While Luna and Charles chatted, Eric was gnawing on a pork knuckle, but he was really listening closely.

Charles had the urge to propose a long-term agreement, perhaps for a year or two, to solidify their partnership.

The words lingered on the tip of his tongue before he swallowed them back down.

In this crisis, Luna had really impressed him, changing his old negative view of her.

Still, he felt they weren't ready for a long-term commitment.

Luna might think, 'I don't want to be with you long-term right now!'

"Nothing, just checking," Charles said, and kept eating.

Eric sighed inwardly and ate quietly too.

Luna didn't dwell on it.

The next day, Luna spent the morning at the police station. Around noon, Evelyn showed up and invited her to lunch.

Luna picked a cheap spot near the station.

After they sat down, seeing Evelyn unsure of what to order, Luna guessed it was her first time there and asked about her preferences, then ordered three dishes.

While waiting for the food, Luna noticed Evelyn's dark circles and guessed she hadn't slept well.

"Ms. Neleson..."

Evelyn chimed in, "Luna, just call me Evelyn. I see you as a real friend. I know you're not the type to say one thing and do another. Let's drop the formalities."

"I've always yearned for a true friend. But my upbringing was surrounded by deceitful relatives, my cousins were all two-faced social climbers."

"They'd compliment my dress to my face and then spill coffee on it behind my back. They'd act all buddy-buddy in public, pretending we were close, but secretly pour hair removal cream into my shampoo."

"Can you believe it? That's the kind of stuff the Neleson girls in Bright City would do."

Meeting Luna, Evelyn couldn't help but open up.

Evelyn felt an unexpected closeness to her.

Luna used a communal fork to give her a piece of fried chicken.

"I don't know how much spice you can handle, but when I'm in a bad mood, I like their spicy fried chicken. It makes me sweat like crazy, and my sweat ends up smelling like chili. It feels like all my bad vibes are getting washed away. You should give it a shot."

Luna didn't give Evelyn advice on dealing with her cousins.

Instead, she shared how she vents her negative emotions. Only by releasing those negative things could one have the energy to think about the future.

She could see why Evelyn was so hung up on Charlie now.

Evelyn had some psychological issues.

She needed someone to guide and counsel her, helping her gradually let go of her obsession with Charlie.

If she lost him suddenly, she'd go off the deep end.

She had no outlet for her stress and grievances in the Neleson family.

The Nelesons valued boys over girls, and granddaughters and daughters were just tools for marriage alliances. Girls growing up in that environment would inevitably have psychological issues.

Unable to vent to her elders, she ended up taking out their anger on her peers. That's why her cousins were always so good at backstabbing and fighting among themselves.

"Spicy food can take away negative emotions?" Evelyn looked skeptical.

She had thought about seeing a psychologist, but her family always found out and canceled the appointments.

They were worried that if people knew the Neleson family's granddaughter needed therapy, it would ruin her chances of getting a marriage alliances.

"There are lots of ways to release negative emotions. Eating spicy food is just one. I asked them to make it extra spicy. Give it a try."

As Luna finished speaking, her phone rang on the table.

Evelyn saw the caller ID and quickly frowned.
