Chapter 138 Not a Single One Can Help at the Critical Moment

Lisa and Luke were arguing over the phone.

Alice was trying to mediate.

Cassandra frowned. If Alice didn't want Luke involved, why tell him? It all seemed like a show.

"Lisa! Why drag me into this? I'm already miserable! Everyone online is cursing me. Is anyone cursing you? The idea was yours, so why can't you share some of the burden with Mom? She's your mother! You were quick to take the benefits."

Ella was struggling and wanted to drag someone down with her, even her sister.

"Saying I took the benefits! Didn't you take your share? Mom's pension..."

"Shut up! Luke! Hang up the phone!"

Seeing Lisa about to say something worse, Alice grabbed Luke's phone and hung up.

Cassandra wanted to hear more about the pension, but it was too late.

Alice glared at Ella. She was supposed to help with the act, not ruin it.

Ella realized her mistake and stayed silent.

"My heart... You're all just trying to anger me. If you can't help, fine! But are you trying to kill me for the funeral expenses? What's the use of having four kids? At critical moments, all you do is upset me. None of you can help."

Alice's guilt trip worked best on Luke.

Luke slammed the table and stood up. "Mom, you still have me! I'll find Lisa myself! If she doesn't come, I'll drag her here! Leave it to me!"

He got up and headed out. Cassandra, worried, quickly followed.

Outside, she grabbed Luke.

"Luke, understand the situation first. We've watched Luna grow up. She's kind and innocent. Logan and his wife were always generous, organizing family Christmas dinners. We helped a bit. If you want to solve the problem, talk to Luna first and see what she thinks."

Cassandra knew Luke well. He had a temper like a rabbit, always jumping around without caution.

"What do you know? What does this have to do with Luna? This is Lisa's problem! If she apologizes, the issue with Luna will be resolved! Don't stop me!"

Luke tried to shake off Cassandra's hand, but she worried he'd get into a fight with Lisa.

Lisa's 400-pound son could beat him to death.

"Think about me and our daughter. If you're going, take Ella. What good is it if you go alone?"

Cassandra realized this was a play by Alice and Ella. With Macus on a business trip, naive Luke was the only one left to use.

"Why can't I go alone? Didn't you hear Mom? With Macus away on some business thing, I'm the only man in the family! I have to stand up for Mom!"

Luke shook off Cassandra's hand and headed downstairs. Cassandra reached out and tugged his sleeve. Luke, focused on going downstairs, missed a step and tumbled down.

"My face..." At the bottom of the stairs, Luke cried out in pain.
