Chapter 208 What Hope Is There in Such a Life
Alice's finger was practically in Cassandra's face. Cassandra just shook her head, thinking karma would catch up with Alice eventually. Alice was on a path to ruin her own son.
Seeing Cassandra stay quiet, Alice got even more fired up. Alice snapped, "What kind of daughter-in-law are you? You don't even back your own husband; you're siding with outsiders! Planning to shack up with Luna or something? Luke's the one making money for you! Is Luna paying your bills?" Alice had a knack for twisting things around.
Cassandra just looked down, staying silent. Arguing with Alice and Ella was pointless. Their logic was so twisted. They kept calling Luna an outsider, but they were eyeing her relocation money. Luke didn't make much money and the Gray family had been supporting them for years.
Cassandra got up and headed to the kitchen. Alice watched her go and then dramatically dropped to the floor. "I can't live like this! I just spoke from the heart, and Cassandra ignored me! I want the best for you more than anyone. My son's hurt, and as his mom, I came to see him, only to be snubbed by my daughter-in-law! Oh God, what's the point of my life?" Alice sat there, crying.
Cassandra was startled, and before she could snap out of it, Luke called out, "Look how upset you've made Mom! If you have something to say, say it! If not, shut up! Can Ethan really hurt me? Luna's not the same person she used to be! Apologize to Mom right now!" Luke almost jumped out of bed.
Cassandra looked at Luke, feeling wronged. It seemed like telling the truth had become her fault.
Every time Alice came over, they ended up fighting. Sometimes Alice hadn't even left yet, and she'd bring them fruit. Cassandra didn't know what Alice had said to Luke, but he'd suddenly flip the fruit plate onto the floor. She had no idea what was going on.
Alice would then act all innocent, saying she couldn't stand to see them argue, making it seem like it was her fault, and then she'd leave. Luke wouldn't explain either; he'd slam the table and storm off, leaving her with the mess.
So today, if she didn't apologize, Alice and Ella wouldn't let it go. They'd make a scene, and in the end, she'd get all the blame. Cassandra sighed, turned around, and looked at Alice. "Mom, I'm sorry; it's my fault. Don't be mad. Please get up."
Cassandra went to help Alice, but Alice just lay there, crying even louder. Luke signaled Ella to help, but Ella was enjoying the show.
Ella said, "Whoever upset Mom should help! Mom's old; not just anyone can bully her. A daughter-in-law should know her place!" Ella shook off Luke's hand.
Cassandra had no choice but to squat beside Alice. Luke got out of bed, and they both tried to help Alice up. But Alice kept twisting around on the floor, refusing to get up.
Ella waited until it was almost enough, then pretended to help. Ella said, "Mom, Cassandra's being unreasonable, but you can't make yourself sick over it. The floor's cold. If anyone should sit, it should be them!"
Ella gave Alice a look, and finally, Alice sat up, her face streaked with tears. Alice glared at Cassandra like she wanted to beat her up.
Cassandra was utterly disappointed in Luke, thinking, 'What hope is there in such a life?'
Emily had lunch at Luna's place and only came back in the evening. As soon as she walked in, she saw the living room in complete chaos.
