Chapter 188 Charles Impulsively Kissed Her
"Lily is Paul's god-sister, but their relationship is totally innocent. She's the sister of an undercover agent Paul worked with when he was a captain in another district."
"After the agent got exposed and dumped into the sea by criminals, leaving no trace, Paul took in his sister and cared for her. Even though the case was solved and Paul avenged him, the girl had lost her family."
"Lily was pretty rebellious and only sixteen or seventeen at the time. Paul, who had divorced early and had no experience raising kids, didn't know how to communicate with her. He often had to pick her up from various police districts where she caused a lot of trouble."
"But Lily disappeared a few years ago, leaving a farewell letter saying she couldn't stand Paul treating her like a child and had run away. However, Paul insisted she hadn't run away but had met with an accident."
"That's when he seemed to change completely," Joah's words made Luna understand.
She saw another side of Paul.
"Joah, Mr. Scott has his obsessions. He couldn't save his undercover agent, so he wanted to do everything he could to help the agent's sister. Even if all the evidence pointed to Lily running away, he'd rely on his intuition to investigate to the end."
"Mr. Scott probably had no leads before, but on the day of the mission, he must have discovered something, which led to his disappearance. The death of the undercover agent was his greatest regret, and finding that girl became his biggest obsession."
"He wanted to avoid that kind of pain again."
Luna's analysis moved Joah deeply.
Those who knew about the past assumed Paul had moved on from Lily's disappearance.
But he had always remembered.
"I'm keeping this under wraps for now, giving him a few days to cool down. He still managed to stay somewhat clear-headed because he didn't take a gun when he left the team; otherwise, the outcome would have been different," Joah said.
Joah still recognized Paul's abilities.
Paul was more than ten years older than him. When Joah first became a detective, several of the outstanding cases he studied had been solved under Paul's leadership.
He hoped Paul would pull himself together and perform his duties on the job.
Luna and Joah chatted a bit longer before hanging up.
She then noticed Charles and Eric had been waiting for her.
"Sorry, I always lose track of time when I talk about work. Let's go home," Luna said.
She got into the car and fastened her seatbelt.
Charles casually asked, "Was that the teammate who got you injured?"
"You can't really say he got me injured. Everyone has their responsibilities. If possible, I naturally hope everyone stays safe," Luna replied.
She didn't mind the injury; she just wanted to help Paul.
On the way back, Luna looked at the key clues Joah had sent her about Lily's disappearance. She fell asleep while looking at them.
Charles stopped the car, but Luna showed no signs of waking up.
Eric waved his hand at him and whispered, "Charles, I'll go up slowly by myself." He was clearly giving Charles and Luna some alone time.
Sometimes he fretted about the pair.
One was cold and reserved, the other was oblivious. He pondered when their relationship would ignite into a romance.
Charles nodded. After Eric left, he turned to look at the sleeping Luna.
As he watched her, he leaned closer.
When he was less than an inch away from her face, Charles impulsively kissed her.
