Chapter 224 The Onlooker Sees Clearly
After "destroying the evidence," Charles felt a sudden sense of relief.
He knew that if he wanted a divorce, the marriage license could be used as supplementary evidence in court. So, he destroyed the marriage license to make the divorce process more difficult.
Now that Luna's marriage license had been torn up and flushed down the toilet, they would need to get a new one before they could proceed with the divorce.
This gave him some extra time to delay.
After doing all this, Charles felt inexplicably light. His phone rang, and seeing the caller ID, Charles instinctively tensed up.
The call was from Luna.
Charles's first reaction was to wonder if she had seen everything he had done.
The living room surveillance hadn't been installed yet, so she shouldn't know!
Charles composed himself and answered the call.
"Charles, are you free tonight? I'd like to invite you and Eric to dinner."
Luna's invitation to dinner made Charles feel inexplicably guilty because he had just torn up and flushed her marriage license down the toilet.
Charles felt a pang of guilt and regret towards Luna.
"I'm free."
"Great, I'll send you the location. See you tonight."
"See you tonight."
Luna quickly hung up. Charles told Eric they were going out for dinner, but Eric waved his hand, asking Charles to cover for him.
"Charles, I don't want to intrude on you two tonight. I want to finish the comic I'm working on. Can you come up with an excuse for me?"
Eric's expression was serious.
Charles frowned, "What do you mean, intrude on us? What are you talking about?"
Eric replied earnestly, "Charles, sometimes an outsider sees things more clearly. I think you want to continue being with Luna, don't you?"
Eric hit the nail on the head.
Charles felt inexplicably nervous but didn't deny it.
Eric continued, "Charles, this place is indeed nice, but for Luna, it will never be our home. But you never made us feel like outsiders.
On the contrary, you even changed yourself to adapt to us. Thank you. No matter how long Luna and I stay here, I will always be grateful to you."
Eric's maturity was far beyond his fifteen or sixteen years. Many kids his age were still throwing tantrums and acting spoiled around their parents.
"Eric, do you know what Luna thinks?"
Since Eric had brought it up, Charles wasn't one to beat around the bush. He wanted to know if Luna had even a shred of reluctance towards him.
Hearing Charles' question, Eric knew that Charles had developed feelings for Luna. It wasn't love, but it was admiration and affection.
"Charles, to be honest, Luna has too many burdens. She probably never even considered the possibility of a future with you."
Eric's words made Charles inexplicably feel sorry for Luna.
Other girls her age were yearning for love, but she had never even considered it.
"I understand. I'll have a good talk with her tonight. You want us to continue being together, don't you?"
Charles patted Eric on the shoulder.
"I respect Luna's wishes."
Even though Eric liked it here, if Luna wanted to leave, he would follow her without hesitation.
Because for him, wherever Luna was, that was home.
In the evening, Emily took Tommy's temperature again, 102.5°F, higher than the previous 101.8°F.
Emily called everyone in the family, but Wendy was busy with her dance class, her father-in-law was playing chess in the park, and Bobby Hill said he was meeting a client but was actually helping Sophia move.
She was the only one taking care of Tommy.
Emily didn't want to bother Luna and Summer, so she gritted her teeth and rushed out the door with Tommy.
It was rush hour, and she couldn't get a cab. Emily paced anxiously by the roadside. Suddenly, she slipped and fell straight towards an oncoming car.
