Chapter 91 Answer Me Like a Man
Charles straightened up and looked at Eric.
Eric continued, "Look, a lot of sick folks have some psychological issues, but most try to hide their true feelings. I'm no different."
"When Mom and Dad died, Luna took care of me during the day and cried all night. Her eyes were swollen every morning, but she never mentioned it. I only knew because I'd wake up in the middle of the night and hear her."
"That was the first time I realized I was a burden. But I was young and scared of dying. I once stood on an overpass, thinking about jumping when a big truck passed by."
"The second time I thought about suicide was because of bad weather. Luna took me to the hospital, and on the way back, it poured rain, trapping us on the road."
"That day, Summer was abroad, Warren was in training, and Emily was pregnant. Luna couldn't find anyone to help. She gave me all her clothes, wrapped me in a raincoat, and pushed my wheelchair through the mud."
"Every step forward felt like two steps back. We finally reached a bus stop, only to miss the last bus. Luckily, we met Sam's taxi, and he drove us to the hospital. Before Sam showed up, I thought about rolling my wheelchair down a slope when Luna wasn't looking."
"But when Luna came back excited after hailing the cab, she hugged me. So I changed my mind because I realized that if I kept going, miracles could happen. The first time I failed to commit suicide was out of fear; the second time was because I felt Luna's love."
"This time, I realized that even though I tried to learn to paint and read so many books, when Aunt Alice and Grandma Ella slandered Luna, all I could do was take care of my health and wait for Luna's good news!"
Eric's voice was soft, with a slight tremble at the end.
Charles raised his hand and gave him a firm pat on the shoulder, like men do.
"Eric, right now, I see you as a man, not a kid! You say you've worked hard and persevered, but that's just what you think. I'm telling you, it's not enough. You're still a long way off! So, are you still thinking about suicide?"
Charles didn't comfort Eric as expected but took the opposite approach.
He could sense Eric's inner struggle and fear of making choices.
Eric's words were heartbreaking, but now wasn't the time for Charles to sympathize. It was a chance to help him out of his predicament.
"Not telling your sister about these things doesn't mean you don't trust her. It means you care about her and love her, so you don't want her to worry."
"But what she wants now is for you to rest and wait for her good news. Isn't that her love for you?"
"You said you gave up on suicide twice, once out of fear and once because you felt her love. So this time, it's your choice to be a man or a coward!"
"Your effort shouldn't just be to repay Luna. It should be for your own future! Not every effort yields results. It's the same in business. Not every time I persist, it works out."
"The key is whether your choice helps you persist to the end."
After Charles finished, he patted Eric's shoulder again.
"Now, answer me like a man. What's your choice?"
When Charles finished, Eric pursed his lips, not out of grievance but out of guilt for his previous troubles.
"I choose to keep going. I choose to believe in Luna. I choose to keep strengthening myself." When Eric finished, Charles nodded in satisfaction.
Charles proposed, "Now, it's your turn to help me with a choice."
Seeing Eric's confused look, Charles cleared his throat and said, "I had a fight with Luna earlier. Should I call her?"
