Chapter 47 No One Compliments Like You Do

When he heard that his car had been scratched,  Charles's face turned grim.

"This car's got cameras watching everything. We've got 'em dead to rights. Call the cops."

"Understood. I'll collect the evidence right now."

After hanging up , Luna had already brought out the last dish.

Charles helped pull out a chair and assisted Eric in sitting down.

"Pan-fried bass with corn fried rice, grilled steak, lasagna, and mushroom soup."

Eric was drooling at the sight.

To Charles, these dishes seemed quite ordinary, but after tasting a few bites with Eric, he found the flavors surprisingly good.

At least, aside from the rather common ingredients, he couldn't find much fault with the meal.

"Is this pan-fried bass made from those small fish?"

Charles ate a piece of the pan-fried bass, finding it tender and smooth, clearly a result of some effort.

"Yeah, those tiny fish were a pain to fillet! But hey, good things take time. Big fish break the bank, and these little guys have a unique flavor anyway."

Luna served Charles a bowl of mushroom soup, the simplest clear mushroom soup without any cream, but the fresh taste of the mushrooms was locked in, making it delicious.

Watching Eric eat several fried small fish, Charles couldn't resist trying one himself.

The small fish were crispy and crunchy, even the bones were crispy.

Charles couldn't help but eat two more. He told himself  that it was because he was hungry.

Normally, he would only eat a bite or two of a big fish.

"Here's five grand for the month. You and Eric eat whatever you want, no need to wait for sales or anything. I'll be back for dinner whenever I'm free."

Luna smiled and said nothing.

Charles told her not to always talk about money.

She could refrain from mentioning it, but some habits were hard to change for her.

She was aware that extravagance, once embraced, was difficult to relinquish.

"By the way, my mother wants to meet you next week. You know, I didn't want a second marriage... She doesn't believe we can last this month."

Charles explained the situation.

"No problem, I'll prepare the food in advance next week."

"Alright."

The rest of their conversation mostly revolved around Eric.

They served him food, poured him soup, and asked if he was tired.

After dinner, Charles habitually sat still. But when  he saw even Eric helping out, he got up to help Eric clear the dishes and wiped the table.

Eric looked longingly at the new easel that hadn't been assembled yet.

Luna understood his thoughts and asked Charles to help Eric assemble it while she washed the dishes in the kitchen.

Charles took half an hour to assemble the easel, and Eric couldn't help but shower him with praise.

"Charles, you're a rockstar! Half an hour? Luna's got some competition now! It usually takes that girl a good twenty minutes to put one of these together.!"

Charles was speechless.

'That's not how you compliment someone!'Charles thought.

He regretted helping Eric already!

In the afternoon, the sun was shining brightly. Eric sat on the balcony drawing, with Charles accompanying him.

Occasionally, he took a few calls to arrange work.

As Charles basked in the rare pleasure of a leisurely afternoon sun, a comforting thought dawned on him: I was starting to feel at home.

Luna had organized the things she bought and took some time to make a fruit platter for them.

The fruits were just ordinary bananas, apples, and pears, but Luna made them into cute cartoon shapes, making them lively and interesting.

"Charles, have some too! The fruit platter looks nice and it tastes even better."

Eric, still a child at heart, loved the cute designs.

Charles nodded, picked up a fork, and stabbed it into the head of a cartoon bunny made from a banana.

Eric couldn't help but tease, "You're so cruel! Couldn't you start with its arm?"
