Chapter 65 No Free Lunch

Before Luna and Charles went home, Mike received a call from Charles and left first.

However, Mike didn't go far. He was hiding in the bushes downstairs, ready to rush up if anything happened.

Charles didn't want Luna to see Mike. The more people she saw around him, the easier it would be to expose his identity.

Mike came out of the bushes after they went upstairs.

After getting home, Luna told Eric what had happened actually because she wanted to put his mind at ease.

Once Eric was resting, Luna left his room and saw Charles still in the living room.

"Are you hungry? Do you want me to make you a late-night snack?" Luna asked.

Normally, Charles would say that eating so late was bad for health and refused to eat.

But tonight, he inexplicably nodded in agreement.

He convinced himself it was because Luna had made him angry tonight, so he deserved to eat!

Luna busied herself in the kitchen for a while. Twenty minutes later, two steaming bowls of pasta were on the table, along with two cups of hot milk.

Before eating, Luna took a call from Emily. It was Summer who had taken the time to accompany Emily to get a medical report.

Knowing everything went smoothly, Luna breathed a sigh of relief.

As Charles ate his noodles, he casually asked, "You can't choose your family, but you can choose your friends."

Charles's words were sharp.

Luna could easily tell.

"Are you questioning my judgment in choosing friends?"

Luna asked directly.

Charles nodded, "That's exactly the case."

Luna put down her forks. She refrained from arguing with him, recognizing that there were aspects of his life he had yet to encounter; regardless of her explanations, he couldn't truly empathize.

"Let me tell you a story. After you hear it, you can judge whether my choice in friends is problematic."

After Luna finished speaking, Charles gestured for her to continue.

"Summer, Emily, and I were college buddies, but our upbringings were worlds apart. Summer, from a wealthy background, the family darling—tough on the outside, tender within.

Emily, though, was a latchkey kid. Grandfolks preferred boys, and she wasn't tight with her mom's side. Rebellious and headstrong, she secretly yearned for tenderness."

"As for me, you already know, so I won't elaborate."

Luna took a sip of milk, her thoughts drifting back to their sophomore year.

"Our school was different from ordinary police academies. In our sophomore year, we had an outdoor internship assessment. The three of us were assigned to a group, led by a teacher, to Peakstone Mountain for a three-day survival training."

"But after entering the mountain, the weather changed suddenly. It was over 70 degrees Fahrenheit.  Then it  suddenly rained. Midway up the mountain, the temperature dropped to below freezing.”

“Our teacher, after comprehensive consideration, decided we should immediately withdraw from the task. But as we were descending, an accident happened. The teacher slipped down a slope and disappeared. Our communication tools were also disappeared along with her.”

“Stuck in that fix, we couldn't ditch our teacher! No bars on our phones, and trekking down the mountain for aid wasn't an option—it would eat up too much time. The teacher's grip might slip. Thus, we stuck together, rotating the lone hefty jacket among us three.”

“Later, Emily broke her leg when she tried to reach a backpack hanging on the cliffside. Summer and I took turns carrying her down the mountain. Before the task, the three of us had spoken less than ten sentences to each other at school."

Luna's narrative held Charles rapt—an uncommon delight for him.
