Chapter 164 Small Kindness, Great Rewards

Charles sat next to Luna, munching on a sandwich.

It wasn't as bad as he thought. Perhaps his dislike for mayonnaise had clouded his judgment, making him assume that any sandwich with mayonnaise wouldn't taste good.

"Granny, why were you in that abandoned factory that day?" Luna asked while eating.

The old lady smiled, sharing her painful past.

"I was there collecting recyclables. My husband died early, and I raised my son by myself. He was the valedictorian of his graduating class, and excelled in the architecture program at Starglade University."

After graduation, he joined a big company and went abroad for work. Unfortunately, a work accident left him a quadriplegic. The compensation money ran out, and I got scammed out of a lot while seeking medical help. His ex-wife sold the house and raised over three hundred thousand dollars for his treatment over three years. When it was clear there was no hope for recovery, my son let her go."

"Now, I take care of him alone. His mind and hands are still functional, so he does some part-time work. I collect recyclables to sell. We rely on each other."

The old lady recounted her story without shedding a tear; she kept smiling. She couldn't fight fate, so she persevered. As long as she was there, her son had hope.

But one day, she would pass away. Until then, she faced life with a positive attitude.

"Granny, since your son studied architecture at Starglade University, our company has some part-time jobs in that field. They're not too demanding and don't have tight deadlines. I'll ask my friend to contact your son," Charles said, surprising Luna.

She thought he'd find the story boring, but he listened intently.

"Really? Thank you so much," the old lady said, looking embarrassed.

Charles quickly reached out to Max, asking him to escort the old lady home and assess her situation. He secretly told Max to see what the old lady's home needed and provide it.

Max's expression turned serious after hearing the story.

"I'm also from Starglade University, but I never heard about this. This alumnus must have his pride and dignity, so he never reached out to our alumni association for help. I'll respect his dignity and emotions and get this done."

Max knew that in Bright City, gaining admission to Starglade University meant being the best. The hardships endured over the years were unimaginable.

The old lady's son, after his accident, didn't trouble the alumni association and let his ex-wife go. He was a responsible man, worth helping.

After Max and the old lady left, Luna gave Charles a warm smile.

"Thank you."

She once thought Charles was indifferent. But today, he changed.

Charles didn't tell Luna that the first sandwich the old lady ate, discarded by someone else, was the one she gave him.

Because of Luna, he saw a different warmth in the world.

The sandwich he discarded was a delicacy the old lady and her bedridden son hadn't tasted in years.

Luna protected an unrelated old lady in a life-threatening situation, viewing it as her moral obligation. In doing so, she indirectly saved a family and helped another paralyzed man.

Life was unpredictable yet full of wonders.

Small acts of kindness could yield great rewards.

Unexpected twists could lead to beautiful outcomes.

This was a profound experience he had never felt in over twenty years.
