Chapter 163 Luna Gets Ambushed with a Hug
Seeing Charles go quiet, Luna worried she might've overstepped. Just as she was about to change the topic, Charles suddenly hugged her.
Luna was taken aback.
In that moment, Charles realized he was starting to accept Luna. Embracing her was something Charles found perfectly acceptable as well.
Maybe he was beginning to like her a bit.
But it was just a surface-level affection, built on admiration and recognition. It wasn't love.
As Luna was still processing the hug, Joah and Warren walked in.
They saw everything.
Though the hug lasted only a few seconds, Warren noticed.
He stood there stunned for a moment, then left.
Charles saw Warren and felt oddly satisfied.
The spontaneous hug seemed worth it.
"Hope we're not interrupting," Joah said, clearing his throat. He thought Luna and her "husband" were moving fast.
He had checked Charles' background and found it clean.
"Joah's here," Charles greeted, playing the role of Luna's husband. He invited Joah and the others to sit and offered them some fruit.
The colleagues appreciated Charles' looks, though he seemed a bit aloof and hard to approach.
"Luna, look who it is," Joah said, helping an elderly woman step forward.
The elderly woman‘s clothes were worn but clean, and her hair was neatly combed. Her face was weathered, but her eyes were kind.
"Ma'am, it's you..." Luna recognized her as the woman she had saved during the building collapse.
"The lady insisted on seeing you and waited at the police station entrance. So I brought her here. You chat with her while the others need to get back to work. I'll track down where Warren went and come back to pick her up," Joah said.
Luna halted Ava and the others, sharing the fruit with them. She had too much from Evelyn, Charles, and Summer. Initially, everyone was reluctant to accept it, thinking they were visiting a patient.
Finally, Charles joked that if they didn't take it, Luna would have to carry it all back to the station herself, making everyone laugh and accept it.
Luna was surprised how effective Charles's words were. This significantly improved her opinion of him.
After Joah left to find Warren, Luna helped the elderly woman sit down. She noticed the woman was holding a takeout box with some contents, and the smell was familiar.
"Luna, can I call you that?" the elderly woman asked, gratitude in her eyes.
"Of course," Luna said, pouring her a cup of warm water.
The elderly woman handed her the takeout box.
"Luna, you haven't eaten yet, have you? This sandwich is from the place across from the police station. It's really good. I've never had such a delicious sandwich before, so I bought one for you."
"Actually, the first time I tried it, I found it in the trash. But this one, I bought with my own money. It's not much, but it's the best I can do. Please don't mind."
"I often see your colleagues eating there, so I thought you might like it too. The owner often gives me unused cardboard boxes. I know you all are good people."
The elderly woman's words surprised and moved Luna.
Looking at her, Luna's eyes welled up. This sandwich was the best food the elderly woman could offer.
Despite being full, Luna opened the box and started eating to avoid disappointing her.
The sandwich was still warm. The unique aroma wafted out as Luna opened the lid.
Luna invited Charles to join her.
Charles had already smelled the familiar scent.
He had a hunch about what it was.
That time when Charles had Mike throw away the sandwich, their car had just driven off, and he noticed an elderly woman collecting trash nearby.
