Chapter 122 The Meeting is Canceled
Adeline said coolly, "He's on a business trip."
Vanessa jumped in, "Summer, I swear, Adeline's telling the truth. I saw him get into the car myself. That car is insane, worth like two million bucks!"
Adeline didn't really connect two million dollars with a Maybach.
She was busy texting Charles.
Her message was short: [I need to borrow you for a moment.]
Charles was confused: [?]
Adeline kept it vague: [I'll explain later.]
Charles chuckled and replied: [Sure.]
With his permission, Adeline felt more relaxed.
Summer looked worried. "He's got so much going for him. Adeline, aren't you worried you'll get the short end of the stick with him?"
Adeline was firm. "He listens to me."
Summer laughed. "That's good to hear!"
Adeline was about to relax when Summer added, "But something still feels off. How long have you known each other?"
Adeline's face stayed calm. "He fell for me at first sight."
Vanessa clapped. "Makes sense. With your looks, who wouldn't?"
Summer wasn't convinced. "But I've never seen him come to see you."
Adeline waved her phone. "We talk online."
Vanessa nodded. "Oh, video chats, right? That's how people date now!"
Adeline smiled, thinking, 'Vanessa, if you could just keep talking.'
Summer thought for a moment and asked, "Why not video call him now?"
That was unexpected.
Adeline stalled. "I'll see if he's available."
Summer nodded eagerly.
Vanessa did too.
Adeline sent a message: [Can we video call now?]
She added a smiling emoji.
She thought, 'He should get the hint to say no, right?'
But Charles didn't play along.
Charles replied: [Sure.]
Summer was thrilled. "He said he's available!"
Adeline was speechless. Charles seemed smart, but he couldn't understand such a hint.
Vanessa urged, "Adeline, call him."
Adeline was silent.
She thought, 'Fine, let's do this.'
Adeline hit the video call button.
The call connected quickly.
Charles appeared on the screen.
He was in a dark suit, sitting in a leather chair, with gold-rimmed glasses, deep-set eyes, looking all intellectual and classy. Behind him was a big screen, and to the right, a huge floor-to-ceiling window.
It looked like the top floor of a building, with the financial district's landmarks visible outside.
"Are you in a meeting?" Adeline raised an eyebrow. "I can call back later."
Charles smiled gently. "No need. I'm just on a break."
The people in the conference room were holding their breath.
But they were grateful for the call. It was like a lifesaver!
Before this call, they weren't sure who Charles would deal with next.
Charles glanced at the long table, signaling everyone to leave.
But who could make Charles's eyes soften like that?
"And my colleagues have left."
As the door closed, they could still hear his pleasant, deep voice.
Matteo even felt like Charles had been replaced by someone else!
Charles stood up, wearing black trousers and a black shirt with the collar slightly open. Looking at Adeline through the screen, he looked even more distinguished and handsome. "Go ahead."
