Chapter 77 Not Suitable for Prolonged Smelling
"Mr. Livingston?" Oscar's eyes widened in surprise. "Why is he looking for her?"
This one sentence made those who hadn't left yet turn their heads.
They couldn't have heard wrong, could they?
The bodyguard in black was terse. "There are items from the Martinez family that need to be returned."
Everyone exchanged glances and felt relieved.
It made sense; how could someone from the Livingston family possibly know her?
Oliver stood in front of Adeline. "I'll go with her."
The bodyguard's tone was stiff. "Sorry, Mr. Livingston only invited Ms. Martinez."
"I'm not a Martinez." Adeline, who had been silent, pressed the phone in her pocket. "Lead the way."
Someone from the Livingston family wanted to see her but it couldn't be about Robert.
Maybe she was accidentally caught on a hidden camera while in the inner hall.
That would be easy to explain. Adeline speculated, and she followed the bodyguard, pacing.
Oliver was worried about her. "Don't be afraid. The Livingston family is reasonable!"
Adeline waved her hand, her back as nonchalant as ever.
Oliver thought, 'What if the Livingston family isn't reasonable? Have a fight? We couldn't win!'
Oliver looked around; these bodyguards were so strong they could knock out two of him with one punch!
Adeline had also observed the layout of the estate. She never intended to use force; after all, everything should be handled with brains.
"Ms...." The bodyguard hesitated on how to address her.
Adeline smiled. "Adeline Vanderbilt."
"Ms. Vanderbilt." The bodyguard opened the door. "Please, come in."
Adeline raised an eyebrow. "You're not coming in?"
The bodyguard said nothing, dutifully standing by the door.
Adeline's face was calm and elegant. With her right hand in her pocket, she quickly removed the SIM card, rendering her phone inoperable.
It looked like a study, with outdoor plants and incense burning on one side.
The first thing Adeline noticed upon entering was the scent.
The study was empty, devoid of people.
But on one side, a screen was displaying footage from the inner hall.
So, the Livingston family had been sitting here all along, watching their every move in the inner hall?
It was impressive.
Adeline smirked.
She didn't make any sudden moves, just scan the wooden box in the center, which had a gold-embossed paper on top.
The handwriting on the paper was strong and forceful.
"Ms. Martinez, please take it."
Adeline's eyes showed a hint of amusement.
She knew what was inside the wooden box—the Whispering Fern that the Cooper family had stolen.
Were the other items outside the box also for her to take?
A black card, a piece of deer antler, and a large bunch of reishi mushrooms were place beside the box.
Adeline lifted her chin slightly, her eyes meeting the camera, and then she made her move.
She took the wooden box but left the other items untouched. Instead, she eyed the tea brewed by the host. She poured herself a cup, and, resting her cheek on her hand, ate a piece of pastry from the plate.
She had just finished a day of consultations and needed something to fill her stomach.
As she ate, Adeline picked up a pen and wrote a note on the paper.
"I'm not a Martinez; thanks for the hospitality. I'll only take what I should. By the way, the dessert is good. As a return favor, I have a piece of advice to Mr. Livingston. Incense should not be burned for too long."
