Chapter 41 A Dramatic Change in Character
"No gossiping," Charles muttered, his eyes still doing that smoldering thing.
Summer rolled up with the wheelchair and chirped, "Hey, it's Adeline's first time bringing friends to the clinic. Y'all have fun. There's tea in the yard; drink up if your stomach's acting up. I'm gonna grab some shrimp to cook for you guys."
Summer knew Charles wasn't just some random dude and probably wasn't really Adeline's buddy, but seeing Adeline bring folks home made her day.
Adeline used to hate this pharmacy. She'd always complain about smelling like medicine and getting teased by her classmates.
Every time she snuck over, she was all secretive, scared Angela would chew her out when she got back.
Summer got it. Even though she raised Adeline, the girl was still tight with her mom.
Angela never gave her props in front of Adeline.
Summer was hip to all of it.
As Adeline got older, her visits dropped off. Sometimes she'd only show up every six months, always claiming she was swamped.
Then, three months ago, everything flipped when she bonked her head. Her whole vibe changed, and she even helped spruce up the pharmacy.
Summer was stoked with the new Adeline. She never thought Adeline would take over her skills.
After all, Summer knew Adeline had zero talent in that area.
She just wanted Adeline to make some real friends. Her old crew was full of phonies. Once Adeline got the boot, they vanished like smoke.
These new kids seemed cool; at least they stuck around.
Summer was so pumped that even Patrick couldn't keep his serious face and had to glance at Charles.
Charles' janky digestion meant he couldn't just eat anywhere. If he messed up, his bodyguard gig would be toast.
Surprisingly, Adeline laughed. "Grandma, they all wanna eat. Get more, and grab me a pumpkin; I wanna make porridge."
Patrick was about to object.
"Then we'll trouble you," Charles cut in, flashing a perfect smile at Summer. "Let Patrick go with you; he can carry stuff."
Summer waved it off. "Nah, you guys chill. I need the exercise."
Patrick opened his mouth but stayed quiet.
Adeline chuckled. "Grandma and Vanessa hit the market every day. You don't need to go."
"Exactly, us old folks have our own hangouts," Summer muttered, grabbing an eco-friendly bag. "Too bad Robert's not here to boil water. That kid's been MIA since yesterday. Who knows which mountain he's off picking mushrooms from?"
This season was prime for mushrooms in Eldoria. Wait too long, and the good ones would be gone.
Lots of kids Robert's age would head to the mountains, so Summer wasn't too worried.
Xavier sidled up to Adeline. "Why do I feel like your grandma looks familiar?"
"You're trippin'." Adeline shut it down.
Xavier stood there, cleaning his glasses. Was he trippin'?
Maybe. The person he remembered was some quack witch doctor, who had killed someone during her treatment, definitely not Adeline's grandma.
