Chapter 43 Ambiguous Fluctuations
Charles tilted his head, eyes half-closed, looking all chill.
Every time she bent down, her hair would tickle his arm.
When you're getting a massage, everything felt way more intense.
Charles stared at her long hair, his gaze getting deeper and deeper.
The massage was only twenty minutes.
But Charles kept wanting to wrap her hair around his fingers, like he was under some spell.
"Alright," Adeline said, all calm. "You can get dressed now."
That's when Charles noticed he was drenched in sweat.
Not the usual cold sweat from his episodes, but a warm, sticky kind.
He looked up at Adeline, his face giving nothing away. "Thanks."
"Today's session was short." Adeline was sweating too, her face glistening, hair sticking to her neck.
Charles felt a weird tickle in his throat and tugged at his freshly buttoned shirt.
Adeline turned to get the needles, her hand brushing his body again.
Charles was sitting, making it easier to feel her breath.
Her breath on his neck was cool and soft, making him restless.
Adeline seemed to notice. "Your breathing's a bit off. Feeling hot?"
Charles shifted to the right. "How much longer?"
His voice was deep and hoarse.
"Not long; just six more needles. Hang in there," Adeline said, all professional.
Charles's gaze shifted to her face. "You seem pretty used to this treatment."
"'This treatment'?" Adeline raised an eyebrow.
Charles reminded her. "You're kinda close."
"Sorry." Adeline realized her posture was a bit off.
He was sitting there with his shirt half-open, lips slightly pursed, hair all messy, looking wild.
His face was flushed from the heat. Her hand was on his wrist, her body leaning forward, almost touching his leg.
Blame it on Charles for being too striking; whatever she did seemed kinda suggestive. Adeline sighed inwardly and pulled back. "I'll be more careful."
"It's nothing." Charles adjusted his shirt. "You've treated so many people, so you probably don't notice these things."
Adeline nodded, her eyes clear. "Yeah. Don't worry. I'm not into your looks. Doesn't matter if you're a guy or a girl."
She said it to put Charles at ease.
But to Charles, it sounded different.
He smiled slowly. "Am I too ordinary to catch your eye?"
Adeline stayed silent.
Patrick walked in right then and heard that. Seeing Adeline and Charles's posture, his eyes went wide!
The wooden bucket fell to the ground!
Patrick stammered, "What... what are you doing to Mr. Livingston?"
"I..." Adeline was about to explain when suddenly, a loud shout came from outside. "Adeline, something's wrong! Someone's blocking Summer at the alley entrance, saying she killed someone with her treatment!"
