Chapter 38 A Pitiful Experience
"Hey Mom, what did Grandma give Adeline? Is there really some inheritance or something?" Stella felt something was fishy.
Angela scoffed, "No way. She's just a scam artist fooling those poor folks in the slums. Seriously, if she was that good, would she be running a foot massage joint?"
Stella raised an eyebrow, "I dunno, Ms. Cooper's been acting kinda weird. Should we check it out?"
Angela waved it off. "Nah, no need. That little shop of hers is nothing special. I heard she even got someone killed once. Ms. Cooper only cares 'cause they've been beefing forever. They're old enemies."
Stella was still confused. "And what about Adeline? How'd she suddenly get into acupuncture? Didn't you and Dad always say she was dumb as a rock? She even flunked out with a tutor at home."
Angela was just as puzzled. "Yeah, she's definitely worth checking out. I need to know what she's up to in Eldoria. If it comes to it, we'll have someone rough her up and dump her in the sticks!"
She was seriously fed up with Adeline!
When Adeline lived at home, she was always embarrassing the Martinez Family. Now, she was out there hustling for money, making them look even worse. Angela felt no guilt; she thought she'd been more than fair to an adopted daughter.
But Adeline was never satisfied. Since that was the case, Angela had no problem being ruthless!
Just by looking at Angela's dark and stormy expression, Stella knew what she was thinking. But Stella kept quiet; it was best not to get involved in these shady dealings.
Stella sighed in relief and smiled, taking Angela's arm. "Mom, you're the smartest."
Angela said, "Stella, what you need to do now is stick close to Ms. Cooper and learn well, so you can impress Mr. Livingston in a few days."
Angela had faith in Stella's looks; her delicate and fragile appearance was super charming!
She continued, "In the future, you're gonna be Mrs. Livingston. Adeline will just keep going downhill. You two aren't even in the same league, so don't mention her again, got it?"
Stella grinned sweetly. "Got it."
They dreamed of a bright future, totally clueless that the Cooper family was about to crash and burn.
At the hospital, while Adeline went to get a prescription for Alexander, Nathan took the chance to fill Charles in on how rough Adeline's life was. "Mr. Livingston, don't be fooled by her cool exterior; her life's tough. Didn't I go drop something off for her yesterday? Man, the street was pitch black, no streetlights, and her place isn't a herbal medicine shop but a foot massage parlor. At her age, she should be in school, but she's out there treating people to support her family. You wouldn't believe it; when I saw her in the square, she was drenched in sweat, giving free consultations to the elderly, saying she wouldn't charge the poor. She's got a heart of gold."
Nathan spoke with real emotion, and Charles couldn't even imagine living like that. But the sympathy on Nathan's face was clear as day.
Just then, Adeline came back with the prescription, and everyone looked at her with a bit of pity in their eyes.
Charles, almost without thinking, said, "You haven't collected my consultation fee yet."
