Chapter 156 Token of Love
Adeline glanced at the mark on his neck, raised an eyebrow, and smirked. "I asked before I bit you. It's to cover your medical bills. What responsibility do I owe?"
"I can pay," Charles said, his voice a bit raspy, probably from a cold. He chuckled softly, his breath warm against her ear. "If you take responsibility for it, I'll let you bite me next time."
Adeline felt a bit tempted. "I'll think about it."
"Think hard. It's not just you who needs a boyfriend," Charles chuckled. "My family is pushing me too."
Adeline raised an eyebrow. "Then why did you call off the engagement?"
She hadn't forgotten what she overheard at the hospital.
Charles' voice was light, his tone lingering. "I always have the right to choose my own bride. Given my situation, marrying me would basically be like signing up for a lifetime of widowhood, right?"
"That makes sense." Adeline nodded seriously. her beautiful face earnest.
Charles chuckled softly, a bit helpless. "I didn't anticipate you agreeing so readily."
He was just trying to coax her.
But there was one thing Charles had been truthful about from the start.
Choosing his bride was his right.
He would handle the Vanderbilt family properly.
This was clearly on the Livingston family, and he would compensate the Vanderbilt family well.
As for other things, Charles looked at the face close to his chest, a clear and elegant smile on his face. Things that had once been of little consequence now held significance, all thanks to Adeline.
Adeline didn't know what he was thinking, her fingers playing with the pendant at his waist. "It's rare to see someone wearing a suit with a pendant."
Adeline had to admit, no matter how many times she looked, she would always be captivated by his handsome and cool face.
Only he was bold enough to make that match; on anyone else, it would look awkward and ugly.
Seeing her fingers lingering on the gemstone, Charles reached out, unfastened it, and placed it in her palm. "For you."
"Me?" Adeline's eyes lifted. "I don't have clothes to match it."
Charles didn't ask for it back. "Match it with whatever you want; it's just a pendant."
Actually, it wasn't. This gemstone had been with him since he was a child, brought home along with the bracelet on his hand. He rarely took them off.
Adeline had a good eye, picking something special.
Adeline looked at him, her voice lazy. "It's not some engagement token, is it?"
"No." Charles saw she was hesitant to accept it, so he simply helped her fasten it at her waist, his voice indifferent. "I wouldn't use just this for an engagement."
Adeline liked the color; such a pure amethyst was rare. "I won't take it for free. How much is it? I'll transfer the money to you."
Hearing this, Charles frowned slightly, his tone cool and slow. "You've given me so many medicinal candies, all made with top-quality ingredients, and you never charged me. Don't treat me like some kind of stranger."
