Chapter 46 The Fake Invitation
Xavier took a beat when he said this.
Charles was all ears. Xavier wasn't sure if what he was about to spill would mess up Adeline's rep in his eyes.
Adeline, though, just gave a little nod, telling him to go on.
Xavier dropped his voice. "My grandpa told me the Martinez Family was pretty average back in the day, but Summer was a real badass, curing all sorts of crazy diseases. Then, she and the Cooper family both got this patient. She was dead set on using witchcraft to treat him, and, well, the dude ended up dead."
Xavier, worried Summer might pop out, leaned in closer. "It was a huge scandal. If someone in Zelphoria hadn't had her back, she would've been locked up. But they couldn't just let it slide, so the Cooper family pushed to kick her out of the medical alliance. Never thought Summer was your grandma."
Adeline's eyes flickered. "How else do you think I got my medical skills? Born with them?"
Xavier scratched his chin. "That make sense."
Adeline didn't say much more. She just twirled the invitation in her fingers, her voice steady. "Time to cook."
She acted like nothing had just gone down.
But Patrick noticed what she was holding and snuck up behind Charles. "Mr. Livingston, that invite she's got looks fake."
Patrick knew the Livingston family invites inside out since he was the one who sent them out.
Charles's eyes darkened, his tone hard to read. "Swap the fake one with a real one in her bag."
"Got it." Patrick's voice was low. "Didn't think she'd show up at the seminar. You two really got a thing going."
Charles found the word "thing" oddly satisfying.
But Patrick wasn't done. "But, Mr. Livingston, the misdiagnosis might not..."
He didn't want to risk Charles's safety.
If Adeline really learned her medical skills from Summer, what if something went wrong during treatment?
Charles shot him a frosty look, his tone ice-cold. "Patrick, I hope this is the last time I hear you gossiping about this."
"My bad!" Patrick replied.
Charles ignored him and headed to the backyard.
Patrick's heart was racing, and he knew better than to speak out of turn again. Charles was clearly backing Adeline, so he had to be ready.
