Chapter 238 Beginning to Break the Deadlock
"I..." Samuel, still quite young, felt his gaze start to wander upon hearing Adeline's words.
Jessica immediately said, "He just looks intimidating. He's still coughing."
Samuel, indeed having a bit of a cold, spoke with a nasal tone, "I missed you."
"Alright, let's all go inside," Leroy said with a smile. "Let Adeline try some of our home-cooked food."
They were clever, working together to usher Adeline into the house.
Inside, four generations of the family lived together, and Leroy introduced them one by one.
Everyone seemed normal, except for the young sister-in-law, who was only two or three years older than Adeline.
Her hair was a bit messy, and she held a child in her arms, looking somewhat dazed.
Adeline called out to her twice before she responded, "Hello."
She had no accent.
Adeline looked at the inside of her forearm and smiled. "You're not from around here, are you?"
"I..." Cadence Sand looked at Adeline, as if wanting to say something.
Jessica nudged her on the back. "Cadence, why are you just standing there? Dinner's ready, go eat."
The warmth in her tone couldn't hide the underlying threat.
Cadence immediately lowered her eyes. "Yes, we need to eat. Eating helps us grow tall."
Such childish words made Adeline raise an eyebrow. "Mom, she..."
"She's got a problem here." Jessica pointed to her head. "She almost drowned once, and ever since she woke up, she keeps saying she's a college student from the city."
Adeline played with the amethyst pendant at her waist and chuckled, "Well, it seems her mind isn't quite right."
"It's more than that. When she sees strangers, she lies down and calls for help. She scared off quite a few tourists last time." Jessica observed Adeline's expression. "Did she scare you?"
Adeline looked innocent. "A little. Her messy hair is quite frightening."
Cadence heard this and hunched her back even more.
The Vanderbilt family had prepared a table full of dishes.
Throughout the lively meal, Cadence never once lifted her head.
The man sitting next to her, in his thirties, kept saying, "Honey, eat this."
Cadence, like a wooden doll, did whatever she was told.
Adeline's gaze fell on her.
Jessica noticed and explained in her ear, "She wasn't easy to marry off, but Reidar didn't mind. Other than their age difference, everything else is fine."
Just then, Leroy accidentally knocked over a dish while toasting.
The dish fell, ruining Adeline's T-shirt.
Jessica stood up and scolded, "How could you be so careless?"
Leroy's face turned red, looking a bit flustered. "Sorry, I..."
"It's okay; it's just a shirt. I'll go change." Adeline seemed a bit shy. "Cadence is about my age; can she watch the door for me?"
She didn't call anyone else, specifically asking for Cadence.
This made Jessica instinctively frown. "Adeline, you..."
"I'm shy." Adeline lowered her eyes.
Seeing her like this, Jessica didn't suspect anything. She looked back at Leroy, who nodded, and then said, "Cadence, go with Adeline, and don't act crazy."
Cadence moved, her face expressionless.
Adeline didn't take her hand either.
They walked one behind the other.
Once they were far away and inside the inner room.
Samuel, as usual, followed to keep an eye on Cadence.
Jessica lowered her voice. "Reidar, why did you let her out?"
