Chapter 157 The Real Him

He hated it when she always shut him out.

She always wanted to keep things clear-cut with him. Whether it was about investments or gifts, it was always the same story.

On the outside, she had this gentle smile and perfect manners.

But deep down, she felt like a mystery, like no one could really get close to her.

Charles's pale fingers brushed the bracelet on his wrist. His handsome face stayed blank, but the warmth in his eyes slowly faded.

Adeline noticed and stopped resisting, a smile curling on her lips. "Alright, I'll take it."

She glanced at her new waist chain, her eyes lighting up with joy. "It looks great on me."

Charles finally felt a bit of relief. The frostiness in his gaze started to melt away as he watched the pendant sway on her slim waist.

Without thinking, he tightened his grip.

Adeline looked up, puzzled. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing." Charles let go of her waist, his voice oddly rough. "Shall we go?"

"Let's go." Adeline, now focused on the amethyst pendant at her waist, didn't notice Charles's slightly moving Adam's apple or the restraint in his eyes.

He walked behind her, raising his right hand slightly to touch the spot on his neck where she had bitten him, his eyes growing darker.

The bracelet on his wrist seemed to turn a deeper shade of red at that moment, as if sensing his emotions. To keep his buried feelings from surfacing, the bracelet glowed, seemingly trying to bind his true self even deeper.

Charles really had to leave. Before he came back, his schedule here was already set. He just wanted to take some time to see Adeline before the meeting.

Matteo was surprised that she could make Charles do something outside of his plans.

When Patrick arrived, they were finally ready to go.

Patrick held a black trench coat, ready for Charles to put it on.

The weather outside had cooled, and with the change of seasons, Charles was at his most vulnerable to falling ill.

Luckily, now he had Adeline.

Once Charles put on the trench coat, his noble aura intensified, like a 19th-century aristocrat, with every move exuding elegance. "I'll come by again tomorrow."

"Alright." Adeline waved goodbye to him.

A breeze stirred, petals drifted down, and for a fleeting moment, the air was infused with the delicate fragrance of blossoms.

Others wouldn't notice that gemstone.

But Patrick, who was responsible for protecting Charles, was momentarily dazed when he saw Adeline's waist.

Besides surprise, there was also a bit of fear.

That was something Charles had worn since he was a year old, meant to protect him.

Few people knew about this.

Even within the Livingston family, not many had heard of it.

Charles carried countless karma.

It was peculiar that someone of Charles's nature would be burdened with so much karma.

Back then, the priest gave the Vanderbilt Family two items: a bracelet and an amethyst.

Each had its purpose. Was it really okay for Charles to give one to Adeline now?
