Chapter 28 You're About to Die

It felt like something was about to explode inside him, like a volcano ready to blow, wanting to break free.

Charles swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing. Standing there in the mix of light and shadow, he looked hot as hell.

Everyone in Zelphoria knew Charles had that whole "untouchable" vibe going on.

He had been a vegetarian for years.

That high-and-mighty aura of his? No one had ever cracked it.

But Adeline? She really ticked Charles off this time.

Nathan was always hanging around Alexander. The Vanderbilt and Livingston families had been tight for generations. Charles often swung by the Vanderbilt Group to deal with contract stuff.

But Nathan had never seen Charles give anyone such a deadly stare.

Usually, Charles was all cool and detached, like nothing could faze him.

What was Adeline thinking? She was trying to mess with Charles's collar.

Nathan rubbed his temples, feeling the headache coming on strong. He probably needed a doctor; his head had been killing him all day.

Actually, ever since he met Adeline, his headaches had been off the charts.

Adeline had no clue how deep she was in. After her lesson, she wanted to bounce. The doctors exchanged looks, all wanting her to stay but not knowing how to ask.

Bald Aaron piped up, "Wanna work at our hospital? We can talk salary and perks."

Adeline tied up her hair and shot him down, "Nah, I hate early mornings."

"You can work in the afternoon!" Aaron said, all excited, forgetting Charles was even there.

But Adeline wasn't budging. "I do this for fun, Aaron. And did you forget something?"

Aaron looked puzzled, "What?"

"I'm a student at Innovative Health Middle School, the one you started." Adeline lifted her black bag.

Aaron felt like he was in a dream. Yeah, he had a school that was barely scraping by, but he wanted even the worst students to have a shot.

She was a student at his school?

Aaron felt a bit dizzy.

He took a deep breath. "Won't you reconsider? I can give you full credits."

Adeline laughed, teasing him, "You don't know me at all. I'm always late and leave early; I don't care about credits."

Charles listened quietly, a smirk playing on his lips, different from his usual cold and dangerous vibe.

Adeline was confused. "What's so funny?"

Charles didn't fix the collar she had messed with. Instead, he leaned in a bit, showing off his collarbone, which had something red on it, maybe a tattoo.

Adeline couldn't see it clearly, just knew it was red.

"You almost gave Aaron a heart attack from suffocation," Charles said with a grin.

Adeline smiled too and reached out, her fingers brushing his wrist.

This time, she was serious.

Her eyes were clear, her voice soft. "Do you know? You're about to die."
