Chapter 232 The Miserable Person
Adeline looked up at the sound.
She saw a couple with honest faces standing outside the door, looking travel-worn.
Adeline withdrew her hand. "Yes."
Jessica looked surprised. "Do you know Adeline?"
"I am Adeline. Who are you?"
Before Adeline could finish her sentence, Jessica covered her mouth and started crying. "Adeline, my poor child, we finally found you!"
She cried so hard that she could barely speak.
The neighbors all gathered around.
"What's going on?"
"Are they Adeline's biological parents?"
Standing in the center, Adeline's fingers paused as she looked at the couple again.
Leroy looked awkward. "Jessica missed you so much; she was afraid she wouldn't see you, so we took an overnight bus."
"Why are you telling her that?" Jessica tugged at Leroy, her eyes red.
The neighbors were already moved by the scene.
Adeline spoke up, "Come in first."
They were still timid, even after entering, they didn't look around.
Adeline made tea for them and brought out some fruit.
They accepted it cautiously.
Summer couldn't bear to watch. "Just make yourselves at home; don't be so reserved."
Adeline didn't say anything, turning the teacup in her hand.
Jessica looked at Summer. "Thank you for taking care of Adeline all these years!"
Adeline smiled reassuringly. "I will repay Grandma's kindness. You must be tired from the journey."
Jessica reached out as if to touch Adeline's face but pulled back timidly, afraid Adeline would dislike her. "You've grown so much. You were just a tiny baby back then."
Adeline had gaps in her memory and was curious about what had happened.
She asked Jessica many details.
Jessica remembered clearly. "It was raining heavily that day. Mrs. Martinez and I were giving birth at the same clinic. Then a landslide hit, and the clinic went dark. No one could see anything."
In the chaos, the nurse mixed the babies of the two families up.
This matched what Adeline had found out herself.
The details were so consistent that it gave Adeline an indescribable feeling.
Jessica looked at her, somewhat uneasy. "Adeline, don't overthink it. Our family isn't poor; we won't be a burden to you. I just wanted to see you."
Summer couldn't stand this and her eyes welled up.
Jessica even patted the bundle she carried. "I brought you some money, and Leroy brought mushrooms from the mountains. You and Grandma can eat them or sell them."
Leroy said "Yes" three times in a row.
They seemed like unfortunate parents looking for their daughter, without a single flaw.
In the evening, Summer invited them to stay for dinner.
The yard was especially lively.
During the meal, Summer asked why they had come so late.
Jessica smiled bitterly. "Her brother Samuel was sick. The doctor said it was acute pneumonia. We didn't dare to leave. We only came to see Adeline after he was discharged."
"Adeline has a brother?" Summer looked surprised.
Jessica nodded. "Yes, Samuel heard we were coming to see Adeline and insisted on coming along, but his health couldn't take it. The doctor said he still needs treatment."
Summer frowned. "He still needs treatment?"
Jessica seemed to be holding back, her voice hoarse. "It's nothing。 Samuel just wants to see you."
Hearing this, Adeline's gaze fell on her face, her eyes deep as if they could see through to her soul.
