Chapter 153 You Should Be Grateful
Charles's heartbeat was strong and steady, totally at odds with his frail appearance. Who'd guess he was terminally ill?
Adeline paused, glancing up slightly.
Charles pulled his hand back and smiled. But then, he turned and started coughing, his lips pale, looking sickly yet somehow dangerously attractive. "She agreed."
Adeline was about to ask what he meant.
Charles turned and took a step, his suit perfectly tailored, his back straight.
Adeline followed, thinking he was leaving.
But he suddenly stopped again.
Adeline, caught off guard, bumped her nose into his back. She caught a whiff of that familiar medicinal scent.
"I gotta say," Charles spoke, his tone indifferent, giving nothing away. "Your taste when you were younger wasn't great."
"What do you mean?" Adeline raised an eyebrow.
Charles glanced at her, saying something cryptic, "But, if your taste improves now, just don't let it slip again."
Adeline laughed, unable to figure him out. "What exactly did you talk about with Grandma?"
Charles beckoned with his finger.
Adeline leaned in without hesitation.
At that moment, Charles's fingers tangled in her hair, his movements natural, his tone casual. "We talked about your studies. Boosting your grades is my new mission."
Adeline seriously doubted he was just talking about school.
As she was about to speak, Summer walked over with a smile. "Charlie's right. From now on, you should focus on your studies."
"Charlie?" Adeline's voice was light, with a hint of teasing. "Charlie Vanderbilt?"
Charles didn't directly answer, his voice low. "It's my nickname."
Summer frowned. "Adeline, you didn't know Charlie's name?"
"I didn't know the nickname," Adeline shot back quickly.
Summer laughed. "Well, if you follow Charlie's lead, you'll ace the next exam."
"Don't worry. I'll make sure she does well." He naturally took her hand, like he did it all the time. His palm was warm, his fingers intertwining with hers, unhurried.
Adeline glanced at her hand in his.
Just as she was about to pull away, he spoke, his voice low and a bit seductive, "Do you want to make her happy for nothing?"
He hit her weak spot. Adeline's hand became more compliant, but her voice was lazy. "You should be glad you're good-looking."
Saying this, her pinky finger hooked his palm, a casual smile on her stunning face.
Seeing this, Charles's Adam's apple bobbed slightly, a certain thirst flickering in his heart, fleeting, probably even he didn't realize it.
