Chapter 19 Got the Wrong Person
Adeline turned to check him out. Nathan was rocking a fancy suit. Not super tall, but he had that big business vibe going on. She couldn't remember ever meeting this dude.
Adeline grabbed her bag, face totally blank. "You got the wrong person."
"I got the wrong person," Nathan echoed, looking bummed. He'd gone by looks alone. When he first saw Adeline, she seemed super familiar, like someone from the Vanderbilt Family. He thought she was the Savannah he was hunting for.
Now, looking back, he realized how dumb it was to rely just on looks.
From what he knew, Savannah didn't have any medical skills. If she did, the Martinez Family wouldn't have let her go so easily.
But her back view was a dead ringer, which threw him off for a sec.
With the mix-up sorted, Adeline was ready to bounce.
But Nathan stepped in her way again. "Can you come with me to the hospital?"
The word "hospital" made Adeline pause. She gave him a look that said, "Go on."
Nathan wiped his sweaty forehead, keeping the Vanderbilt Family's name out of it, and said, "Here's the deal. Our boss was chilling in the countryside and suddenly got a fever that won't quit. Even after antibiotics and IVs, his temp's still high. I need you to check him out."
"He's in a hospital, so chill. The pros will handle it, and he'll be fine," Adeline said, not wanting to get involved. Rich folks like them could easily find top-notch doctors. There was no need for her to be there, and she had her own stuff to do today.
Summer still didn't know the Martinez Family had booted her. Adeline had planned to visit her after her free clinic gig.
Nathan, looking desperate, said, "Our boss is at Eldoria Medical University Affiliated Hospital, under Ms. Cooper's care. I'm worried he's getting the wrong treatment!"
If Alexander was sick in Eldoria, he'd definitely go for the best medical care there.
But hearing the old man's description, Nathan was genuinely freaked out.
First, Alexander's symptoms were super weird. Second, if he couldn't find Savannah, bringing in a top doc to fix Alexander wouldn't mess up his job.
"I owe you a favor. Our boss is old and can't afford any screw-ups in his treatment." Nathan laid it all out. "Plus, I don't wanna lose my job."
After thinking it over, Adeline said, "I charge for house calls. A grand. You cool with that?"
"Yes! Yes!" Nathan nodded like crazy.
A thousand bucks for her killer medical skills? It was like hitting the jackpot!
What was medical ethics and conscience? This was !
Nathan quickly led her to the curb, bowing a bit. "Please, get in the car!"
It was a swanky business ride with plush interiors, and the plates were from Zelphoria.
Adeline, being sharp, pieced together the info she'd gotten earlier. She had a hunch and smirked. "Is the sick guy's last name Vanderbilt?"
Just as Nathan was about to hop in, he almost tripped!
Nathan freaked out, sweating bullets. "How'd you know? I never said that!"
Adeline propped her chin, a candy in her mouth, eyes twinkling. "Nathan, chill. I was just guessing. Vanderbilt sounds pretty grand, right?"
"Just a guess." Nathan sighed in relief but still felt uneasy. How'd she nail it so perfectly? But now wasn't the time to argue. "Yeah, Vanderbilt does sound grand."
Nathan kept telling himself she only treated old folks in the community and couldn't be tied to the Zelphoria elite. He was probably just overthinking it.
