Sara waved her hand dismissively. "Yeah, surgery's the only way. Don't believe me? Go see someone else. Don't waste my time. Next!"
The old man freaked out. "Ms. Cooper, I didn't mean it like that. You're the expert here. My condition..."
The video cut to black right there.
Then another video dropped!
On the screen, Sara had this cold smirk. "Country folks are always such a hassle."
An intern doctor piped up, "Ms. Cooper, this isn't right. It's just a small benign cyst. We could..."
Sara's face twisted. "Who's the chief here, you or me?"
A few days later, that intern doc got the boot from the hospital and vanished.
That same month, Sara went public, saying this guy caused a medical accident under her watch and warned other hospitals not to hire him and schools not to give him a certificate.
The intern doc got blacklisted. On the video, he took off his mask, showing a scar near his eye, and stared into the camera. "I thought this would stay buried forever. I wrote complaint letters, but it was useless. The Cooper family runs Eldoria, and Sara was my mentor. I thought about staying out of it, but I studied medicine. I'm from a small town too. I asked myself, why did I study medicine? Just to get a license and a respectable job?"
He shook his head, tears rolling down his scarred face, but his eyes were bright.
"No, I want to save people, those ordinary folks like me who don't get medicine. I remember saying I'd dedicate myself to humanity's health, uphold the dignity of medicine, respect life, and save the dying and injured."
He recited the doctor's oath, and it hit everyone hard—from the elderly in the community square to the pregnant moms at check-ups, even all the doctors at the manor.
The video wasn't done. The scene shifted back to Sara, sneering. "How dare a grad student with no background challenge me? Doesn't he know to respect his mentor?"
Someone chimed in, "You're right. He doesn't get the rules."
Sara took off her mask. "This surgery's done. Keep an eye on him; don't let him bleed out. Poor folks are easy to fool. They don't get anything and don't have the luck of the rich. Schedule the next surgery. I need to do more this month."
The video switched scenes again.
The old man, because of an unnecessary surgery, could never get out of bed again.
The video ended abruptly with one sentence.
[Luck never seems to favor the poor. Cooper family, how will you repay them for their lives?]
Almost as soon as the video ended, it blew up on the news.
Someone tried to bury it with cash, but it wouldn't stay down!
People outside Eldoria were buzzing about it too.
Once it hit a certain level, it became a public issue. Who'd dare help the Cooper family? No one!
Those who were once tight with the Coopers now couldn't run away fast enough!
Paul made a ton of calls, but no one picked up!
He got one vague reply. "Prepare to cut ties."
And that was it.
The Cooper family was done for, totally and completely!
