Chapter 73 Your Marriage
Nicholas checked out Charles' handsome face. "You seem pretty chipper today."
Charles paused, fingers mid-air. "Do I?"
"Grandpa, Patrick should've filled you in on my health and some folks I've met recently," Charles said.
Nicholas glanced at the sky, playing it cool. "Patrick's your bodyguard. Why would he tell me all that?"
"Fair point," Charles replied with a smirk.
Everyone in the Livingston family was blunt, except for Charles, who was always a bit sly.
"Alright, spill it. Who's the miracle doctor Patrick mentioned among today's guests?" Nicholas wanted a private chat to thank them.
He knew many top doctors had said Charles wouldn't make it past 27, but at least now Charles was eating better, which was a win for the family.
Charles kept it vague. "Take a guess."
Nicholas pulled out a list. "Is it the guy from the Taylor family? His skills aren't that great. Or maybe someone from the Mitchell family?"
Nicholas guessed everyone but except Adeline.
"It can't be Adeline," Nicholas said, leaning on his cane and shaking his head. "No way! You're allergic to any girl who gets close to you, except family!"
It was Adeline!
Patrick screamed internally but couldn't say a word.
Charles stayed cool, fiddling with his bracelet, eyes slightly raised. "You seem pretty impressed with her."
"Yeah, she's something else," Nicholas said, his mood lifting. "You wouldn't believe how clever she is. She treated me but gave the credit to someone else."
Classic Adeline, Charles thought, hiding a smile. "Who turns down credit from the Livingston family?"
"She probably sees them as a team and doesn't want to hog the spotlight," Nicholas said, clearly impressed. "She's calm, knows how to share the glory, and has great medical skills. It's just a shame she's a girl and can't get close to you."
That was Nicholas' biggest worry.
Charles had never been close to anyone since he was a kid.
Nicholas felt a pang of bitterness. "What about your marriage?"
"Don't worry," Charles said calmly. "I've already told Mr. Vanderbilt my health isn't good enough for marriage."
Nicholas' beard bristled. "I didn't mean break off the engagement! I meant think about your feelings!"
"I have," Charles said, coughing a bit, his face pale and breath weak. "Grandpa, you know I can't make anyone happy with my health."
Patrick suspected Charles was faking it but didn't dare call him out.
Nicholas knew Charles was playing him, but he couldn't shake the priest's prophecy from when Charles was born.
