Chapter 44 A Farce

Hearing this, before anyone else could react, Adeline bolted out the door.

She moved fast, snatching up a wooden stick from somewhere, her eyes blazing with anger.

A crowd had already gathered at the entrance of the alley, all neighbors who had just come back from grocery shopping.

"What's the deal here?"

"They're here for Summer, saying she caused someone's death with her treatment."

"No way!"

"Why not? Witch doctors are sketchy."

"I just had her massage my neck yesterday. Should I be worried?"

"If this is true, we can't go to her anymore."

Listening to the gossip, Summer gripped her cane so tight her knuckles turned white, her legs shaking.

Matthew Cooper laughed arrogantly. "No wonder you've been living so comfy here. Turns out no one knows about the stuff you've done."

He shook his head. "You really think you're still the same as before? Witch doctors are old news, and you still dare to steal business from the Cooper family."

"I don't know what you're talking about. Move aside," Summer said coldly, leaning on her cane to walk.

Matthew blocked her way. "I said you're crippled. Why are you still playing dumb? Wasn't it your idea to send Adeline to the hospital?"

"Adeline?" Summer suddenly looked up. "Are you talking about Adeline?"

The man sneered. "If Sara hadn't asked me to come personally, I wouldn't have bothered. You must really want to attend the Livingston family's medical seminar, right? Here you go!"

Matthew threw the "invitation" at Summer. "Aren't you capable? Go treat Mr. Livingston if you can, you old hag..."

Before he could finish his sentence, Adeline kicked him.

That kick brought Matthew to his knees, making him hit the ground hard!

"Who dares to kick me?" Matthew tried to turn around in pain.

Adeline placed her hand on his shoulder, her voice indifferent. "Me."

"You!" Matthew couldn't stand up and tried to throw a punch.

Adeline bent down, applying more pressure, her voice slow. "What did you just say?"

Matthew was in so much pain that cold sweat broke out. He couldn't move. "What does this have to do with you?"

"My patience is limited. You better watch your tone, or..." Adeline leaned close to his ear. "I'll break your bones."

Matthew could feel she meant it. His shoulder joint was already dislocated, and he stared wide-eyed in pain. "Let's talk this out."

"Adeline." Summer worried that the neighbors watching would affect Adeline's reputation.

Adeline, however, didn't care much, her voice calm. "Grandma, people like him should be beaten to death so they don't get a chance to bully others."

"So it's you, Adeline!" Matthew, sweating from his forehead, spoke disdainfully. "you better let me go now. One of you caused a death, and the other is shameless. When the police arrive, let's see who can leave!"

Hearing this, Summer stepped forward to pull Adeline away. She took a deep breath as she looked at Matthew. "Matthew, you're here for me. Say what you have to say; this has nothing to do with Adeline."

Matthew said, "I've already given you the invitation." Matthew shook his arm, looking proud. "Our Cooper family is generous, unlike you who treat patients secretly. Now Sara is giving you this chance to openly curry favor with the Livingston family."

Summer looked at him. "What is Sara up to now?"

"You're in this state; who would bother with you?" Matthew scoffed. "Your medical skills are poor. If you're afraid to go, just say so. Are you scared of using the wrong medicine and causing another death?"

With these words, the surrounding eyes varied, all pointing and whispering.

Summer's hands stiffened, not moving.

Matthew laughed wildly. "I knew you wouldn't..."

"Three days later? The Livingston family?" Adeline interrupted him.
